Adding my part to the pile of Thief tinkering. A single chance of success for all Thief skills. I'm sure someone has thought of this before, but I couldn't find anything on the web, so I'm blogging about it so I can get told who that someone was.

Simple OSR Thief skills on a d20
Observation 1 : Most of the Thief skills in B/X D&D improve in increments of 5%, which makes using a percentile die rather pointless. You can take the percentile (and x-in-6) Thief skills table, convert all the values onto a d20 target number, and it looks ...

Presenting the Only Good Encumbrance System for 5e
Snarky intro warning. If you don't want to know why you should use encumbrance and will just take my word for it, skip to the last section.  Preamble Most people don't want to track the amount of stuff in their inventory. That's fine. Most people are also p...

In case you want to use random starting equipment, but still differentiate each character a little, here's d120 random starting tools and trinkets that may or may not be useful in the dungeon.

Fast OSR Character Creation: d120 Bonus Tools and Trinkets
Here's how you generate characters in my game. The priority is speed at the table, while still giving every character something small and unique. Nothing super involved or gonzo like alien technology or slime pheromones; almost all of the items are based on...
