Failure?

The first six photos below were meant to form my 'Six Image Narrative'. The story I wanted to tell was a depiction of the rise of robots as humans reached for space, realised they couldn't get far and turned to automata, which eventually outlived them. I chose this narrative as I wanted to make use of the skeleton figure, having used it many times in my photos, and I liked the concept of having a newcomer represented by a minifigure using a piece of one of my most recently acquired figures, the Rocket Boy from series 16. I'm not sure this story would've worked that well anyway without some studio diorama work to depict the limits of human space travel, but I think the location I did pick really lets the shots down. I chose it because I'd been very pleased with a few shots I'd done there before (the two after the six narrative shots below), and liked the darker mood it had lent them, but I'd totally failed to realise that not only did the location not actually fit the story I wanted to tell, but that now that it's June and hasn't rained for a few days the area looks totally different to how it did in winter when I took the other shots - the constantly shifting, sometimes harsh, sometimes grey light didn't help either.

In short, despite boasting earlier this week of having meticulously planned my narrative, I think I rushed into this project without nearly enough consideration, desperate to take part in the challenge soon even if it meant a poorly told narrative confined to an ill-fitting location. Even my edit was a hurried mess, imposing a square crop and desaturated colours on the photos for the sake of cohesion and little else. I'll be honest, I think I do this fairly frequently, rushing into an idea at such speed that I end up with something not nearly as good as it could've been.

Anyway, I realise I've just moaned on about these six images for a while, but I would appreciate some input from others on this topic; I'm interested to hear whether you good folks agree with me that this project has proved a bit of a car crash, or whether you think I'm overreacting.

Meanwhile, I'm going back to the drawing board: I'm beginning to formulate a new narrative more suited to my outdoor photography, with more consideration of what would be a good representation of my past work, and I'm determined to give this one the time it needs to work well. On the plus side, while out shooting this attempt, I did manage to get some other photos that I'm really pleased with, which I'll share soon. Every cloud, as they say...

Well. Hmm. After all that planning, I just couldn't get the shots I was envisioning when I went out to shoot today. Back to the drawing board, I think...

On the last day of entry: my final shot of Ultron for #TinyToysBigScreen - simple, but effective with this one, I think 😀
Photo

I've reviewed my photos and picked a theme.
I've picked out my figures and accessories.
I've planned my locations.
I've checked the weather forecast.
I've changed my mind about my figures.
I've tweaked my locations.
I have a plan.
My Six Image Narrative is on the way!

As it is apparently #worldgothday (it's trending on Twitter, at least...), here's a pair of smitten Goths. 😉

For my second #TinyToysBigScreen entry, a very different edit of Ultron.

Here goes; my first #TinyToysBigScreen entry!
There's a bit of a story behind this one. I (or rather my brother) got a set with some Ultron figures in it soon after I'd seen the film at the cinema, and I've been trying to get a photo of him I'm happy with ever since. I came close last summer with a shot of three Ultron drones enjoying a coffee break, but I just couldn't quite seem to sit them how I wanted. Then I saw this month's photo contest! This was it- the catalyst for a good shot of Ultron, at long last. Sure enough, I've finally managed to get a few shots I'm happy with. I've got a couple more on the way, but I thought I'd post this 'poster' shot first.

For those who saw my ramblings a few weeks ago about the differences between social medias (and those who didn't), I've now, on +Shelly Corbett's invitation, gone away and written up a much longer post for the blog examining which platform I think works best for toy photographers (spoilers: it's this one!). Go check it out if you're interested!

Can't decide whether I prefer these skeletons in colour or b&w, so here's both 😀
