The Milky Way stretches above Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii. This photo was taken from the observatory access road on Mauna Kea. The bright orange spot in the center of the lower part of the photo is from steam illuminated by the glow of lava in the Halemaumau crater.

Gastown steam-powered clock in Vancouver, CA -- Actually it is a weight-driven mechanical clock, but steam power raises the weights to the top periodically, and steam power plays the pipes announcing the time every quarter hour.

This is the best astrophoto I could get on a 2-week trip to Peru in September. I had expected better conditions at an elevation of 12,500 feet...

This is an all-night time-lapse movie taken the night of an unusually high predicted peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower. In this video, you'll see numerous airplanes (slow moving), satellites (medium speed, no color) and meteors (just a flash, often green). [ More photos at http://astrocamera.net/2016/0811/ ]

Perseid meteors "point to" the radiant point in Perseus, rising at the left horizon, but there were many bright meteors from another shower also visible. The 1st quarter moon was up in the early evening, causing the blue skies. After the moon sets (about 1AM), the sky darkens, and then turns blue again as sunrise approaches.

Watch at about the 2:10 mark for a burst of meteors, including two very bright ones in succession.

Bright Perseid meteor - 11 Aug. 2016. This Perseid meteor ran along the Milky Way as the moon was about to set (upper right). The meteor shower radiant in Perseus is near the horizon on the left side of this all-sky photo.
