Open Source Illustrator Scripts etc. -

Over the years I have created a few tools to automate or otherwise reduce my workload in Illustrator when working on development/design projects. Today, I thought, "Why don't I start putting these on github?" So, I did. Right now, the only thing in there is a quick little script I made to export your iOS icon into all the various formats requested by Apple. Just run the iOS-Export-Icons.jsx script on your active document, and you'll have every size you need to drop in place and move on. Hopefully, my compulsive need to haul-ass-and-bypass certain parts of the development/design cycle will benefit you as well.

*An Update an +Fixer * -

If you were wondering why your Google+ layout reverted to its old ugly self, it's because the powers of PlusFixer have been revoked. =/

Google Borks PlusFixer -

I first noticed this yesterday evening, but now it seems to be widespread: PlusFixer no longer works. =(

It looks like Google has completely changed their layout again...not visually, mind you, but in the "code." They must be determined to have this horribly tiny content column and completely obtrusive and unnecessary chat sidebar. I'll try to get around to fixing it, but I'm working on another (pretty big) project with +Mohamed Mansour and +Rayan Bouajram that we hope to announce soon. That, combined with actual paid work from my clients and the taking care of my infant son, will knock PlusFixer down a bit in the priority list, unfortunately. =/

In the meantime, here's a monkey:

That poor monkey must be getting tired... Any chance Plusfixer will be revived or have you given up on it ? Just looking for a bit of news...

Some quick updates to react to the changes Google+ recently released from +Fixer page.

PlusFixer v1.1.0 Released -

Finally got around to reacting to Google's recent centering and sizing changes. Your PlusFixer experience should once again be restored. If you have not yet installed PlusFixer, you can grab a copy for your browser of choice at plusfixer.com. If you have already installed PlusFixer, you should get the update automatically.

Maven With JRuby on CentOS -

I've had this problem with my Maven builds on CentOS for a while now. My project uses SASS for stylesheet simplification, and that requires a couple of Ruby gems to build. If you have a similar project/environment, you are likely to see this when Maven runs:

_WARNING: JRuby does not support native extensions or the `mkmf' library.
Check http://kenai.com/projects/jruby/pages/Home for alternatives._

Solution:

You'll need a few things on your server. First make sure you have git, ant, and gcc:

sudo yum install -y git ant gcc

Then, in some useful source directory of your choosing, clone the JRuby repo (use sudo if you chose /usr/local/src like I did):

git clone git://github.com/jruby/jruby.git
cd jruby
ant clean jar cext
Then run your Maven build again. Should work just fine. =)

Another One Bites The Dust -

Rick Santorum just dropped out of the race for the Republican nomination. I've now dropped his name from plusometer.com. Who will be next?

Using RestKit To Reset Your Persistent Store -

If you are using RestKit for your iOS app (highly recommended btw,) you can do an easy factory reset of any stored data with this very simple bit of code. (See link for details.)

zipl.us RSS Feeds Restored (again) -

Seems Google is a huge fan of the moving target. I've released an update to zipl.us to get your public Google+ RSS Feeds working once again. Hopefully it will last more than a few days this time. =)

zipl.us Feeds Fixed -

Apparently, Google made some more changes that broke your public zipl.us RSS feeds. I just put the fix online. No action needed on your part. Thanks to +Ben Woods for bringing this to my attention.

+Paul Gailey Alburquerque OK, I released another fix. They keep getting sneakier and sneakier those Google-devs...

Give it a shot now, and let me know if it's working for you.

The thing about this extension is the Klout badge is HUGE. couldn't you make it smaller? It's almost as big as our freaking log.

Oh No, Dojo -

Just now getting around to looking at +Dojo Toolkit 1.7, currently version 1.7.2. The 1.7 branch has actually been out for a few months. It's supposed to be backwards compatible. Well, it isn't. =/

Here's the problem: if you are doing a custom build, which I hope you are, the you probably have optimized your page loads by including necessary modules or layers as <script> tags in your header. Instead of using a bunch of redundant dojo.require() calls, you are putting exactly what you want to load in reusable modules to optimize download times for each page of your app. These modules are, of course, defined in your build profile. However, now, with Dojo 1.7, your development environment will no longer work with <script> tags. They've changed the loader such that you must use dojo.require() to include modules or layers of your custom build... (See http://dojotoolkit.org/reference-guide/1.7/releasenotes/1.7.html#loader-builder-related for more details.)

Say what??

This would mean that to just jump right in and get running with Dojo 1.7, you'd need to make your development environment build against a non-source release of Dojo. Granted, you don't really need to care about download-time optimization in development so much, but having the uncompressed source code handy in your IDE sure is helpful when you are using that certain undocumented part of Dojo that just isn't working as expected. (Let's face it; that happens a lot.)

In other words, Dojo 1.7 is not backwards compatible for any reasonable build system you were already using for your production deployments. This is very disheartening. I like Dojo and have been using it for many years now. I had a nice, tidy build that would compress the scripts in-place for production deployments and leave them alone for local testing. Now, I'll have to keep the source tree on-hand somewhere it can be compressed and then shifted into place while using a pre-compressed build simultaneously in development. Ugh...
