It's important for citizens to understand that #marijuana use is still illegal in #Maryland . However, the possession of small amounts of it (10 grams or less) will not result in criminal penalties such as jail time or a criminal record - instead, such infractions will be treated as civil, and therefore will be punishable by a citation and/or fine.

For supporters, it's a legislative high. Maryland's House of Delegates has passed a law decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Thanks to +Gary Gerstenfield on the legal consequences resulting from #possession of small amounts of #marijuana in Maryland. In #Pennsylvania, possession of 30 or less grams of marijuana is classified as an ungraded misdemeanor; has a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a $500.00 fine; and, the collateral consequence of loss of driving privilege.

In light of new laws that will take effect October 1, 2014 that will "decriminalize" the possession of small amounts of #marijuana , #Maryland prosecutors are taking varying approaches to pursuing  individuals currently caught with small amounts of #marijuana .

Interesting change in the law +Gary Gerstenfield. I'm assuming this was a compromise by people who wanted complete decriminalization and those who opposed it?
