Yep - meetups and notifications for cool/upcoming events. I've lived here 4 years now so it's about time I finally interact with some Redditors.

+Aurora Estrada, I, +Gaspar Betancourt, made this page. I don't know why it hasn't been added to the r/Miami sidebar yet. They still have that super long thread as the Google+ page.

Introduction
Miami, FL Frequently Asked Question

I've never been to Miami, but I'm moving there! Where should I live?

Most cities are designed like a baseball, but what we locals affectionately call “Miami” is designed like the worlds biggest pancake. The reason for this is that when we refer to Miami we really mean the greater Miami-Dade County. The city of Miami for the locals includes the surrounding towns (interesting factoid: in a 20 mile bike ride you can cross 7 city limits!) and most likely if you are thinking of moving to “Miami” you are really moving to one of the suburbs that surround our beautiful city. It’s because you are going to live outside the city of Miami that you are encouraged to have a car. It is very difficult to get from one city to the other without one as our public transportation is horribly unreliable, but if you are willing to make the commitment you can get around in a bicycle just fine.

Let’s take a look at some of the Cities and Neighborhoods:

  • Coconut Grove is good for a laid back lifestyle. Many places within walking distance to food, bars, and a major mall.
  • Coral Gables is a little more upscale, but deals can be had. Ages vary widely in the downtown area, mostly families everywhere else. Lots of restaurants and bars downtown.
  • Brickell (aka Downtown Miami) is usually pricier. There are lots of young adults which means there are various restaurants and bars within walking distance or public transportation.
  • Miami Beach has all sorts of price ranges (house vs. townhouse vs. apartment vs. condo). Every area has something within walking distance, although the further south is better. Miami Beach used to be filled with retired people, but has become trendier and filled with 20 and 30 somethings.
  • Kendall is far from many of the commercial places (where jobs are located) but rents are much cheaper and/or more room. It is filled with families.
  • Doral is not as far as Kendall, but be prepared for a 1 hour commute to downtown in rush hour. Not as cheap as Kendall, but the places are usually newer and nicer.
  • Wynwood is one of the more "hipper" areas to be at the moment. Because of this, rents are inflated (in my opinion), BUT the area has lots to do. There is a nice big mall, good food, and clubs/bars. It has buses, but no Metrorail (train) or Metro Mover (small tram) in the direct area. It is also very close to downtown and Miami Beach.

Now from these descriptions you might say to yourself, hey Kendall is cheaper, and you might want to move there. But keep this in mind, if you want to party in Miami Beach or Downtown on the weekends you are going to have to take a highway there and back. This means a Designated Driver is a MUST, or you run the risk of getting a DUI and not having a car for a couple of years or killing yourself and possibly others.

Where do you hang out?

Miami: Separating Fact from Fiction

  • Miami isn’t the way it is portrayed in most Hollywood movies and in television. Not everyone in Miami is rich with beautiful women hanging around them like sex slaves while they drink Mojitos and snort cocaine. For a more accurate portrayal of Miami watch Dexter. The neighborhoods look pretty much as they are portrayed in Dexter, for the most part. The people are kind of like Dexter and his friends (yes, I am taking into account the fact that he is a serial killer, but that’s our city!).
  • You do not have to know Spanish to live here. But people will surely assume that you do and speak to you only in Spanish. If you aren’t an open minded individual, if you are xenophobic, if you think immigrants are the root of all the problems in America, this is NOT the place for you.
  • It’s true, we are horrible drivers.
