Startups in NYC, Seattle, Austin, must start thinking about Facebook's Engineering Talent Suction
Facebook is opening offices in several cities including in NYC, Seattle, and now Austin (with Gowalla buy) as they blow out their engineering teams beyond Palo Alto, here in Silicon Valley. (news here: http://bit.ly/uMqotW
What will this do to the engineering community?
We know that Google is so deathly afraid of losing Software Engineers and there are multiple document stories of signing bonuses over a million dollars. (Here: http://bit.ly/v8PQn7
With this expansion, this will cause software startups to start to feel a real talent drain, and half to offer significant retention bonuses to existing software engineers, just as Google has had to.
A few quarters back, I read that SW engineers are in such high demand, that there's nearly 0% unemployment of this role in Silicon Valley. (by definition "People who are jobless, looking for jobs, and available for work are unemployed."), which makes sense.
On a related note, see that Silicon Valley engineers at Google make $180k and Facebook make $150k
and the demand for jobs that involve "Facebook" or "Twitter" are on the rise (source http://bit.ly/hf07n8
