Do you think there is any correlation between the fluctuations in Klout scores over the past few months and the recent push of Klout perks? Perhaps Klout has been changing the algorithm to somehow add more value for these brands they work with. I would be curious to hear how Klout pitches these brands on partnering with them. I could be totally off-base with this, but just wanted to see if anyone had read any speculation on this yet.

My personal opinion is that while Klout desires to be the standard measure of influence, that goal is a challenge and with the rapid evolution of "the internet as a community" - apps, features within apps, etc. - it's not really possible.  Maybe it's at least a benchmark that we can use as we learn more about how Klout sees influence (i.e. they need to share more!).

Why I use Klout for the most part: it's a great way to let someone know I value their "influence" on a particular topic.  It's a good "publiic thank-you" that's a bit more than a simple thank-you tweet.  Klout's +Ks are sort of like a virtual good - a digital currency that says, "I have a few of these, and I'm sharing them with these other folks."  Limiting the amount of +Ks someone can have at a given time creates scarcity, which creates value when bestowing the otherwise meaningless mouse click on select folks.  We can give "Likes" and "G+" in unlimited amounts.

Klout is funded by some of the most prominent VC, so that tells me they may have some staying power while trying to (1) figure things out and (2) establishing brand.

Regarding their perks, it seems that perks are just online couponing and that they are still experimenting with what works.  I don't think  they are manipulating the Klout scores just to map to a perks strategy  because they are still trying to figure out each piece individually, too.  Just my $0.02...

Startups in NYC, Seattle, Austin, must start thinking about Facebook's Engineering Talent Suction

Facebook is opening offices in several cities including in NYC, Seattle, and now Austin (with Gowalla buy) as they blow out their engineering teams beyond Palo Alto, here in Silicon Valley. (news here: http://bit.ly/uMqotW)

What will this do to the engineering community?

We know that Google is so deathly afraid of losing Software Engineers and there are multiple document stories of signing bonuses over a million dollars. (Here: http://bit.ly/v8PQn7)

With this expansion, this will cause software startups to start to feel a real talent drain, and half to offer significant retention bonuses to existing software engineers, just as Google has had to.

A few quarters back, I read that SW engineers are in such high demand, that there's nearly 0% unemployment of this role in Silicon Valley. (by definition "People who are jobless, looking for jobs, and available for work are unemployed."), which makes sense.

On a related note, see that Silicon Valley engineers at Google make $180k and Facebook make $150k
source: http://bit.ly/oBq7CK and the demand for jobs that involve "Facebook" or "Twitter" are on the rise (source http://bit.ly/hf07n8)

Sun Microsystems was one of my firms largest clients in 2001 and we were very tightly knit with a lot of executive teams at that time.

On this day, I remember Scott McNealy instructed that unused / expendable hardware across the campus and stuff in the warehouse be put on a chartered flight that would fly from Moffet Airforce base straight to Wall Street to get business back up on its feet.

No POs, no credit checks, no nothing.

Thanks to Felix Serna for reminding me of this.

I might try to start posting on Google+ more now. However, I hate the idea of Klout having any control over how I spend my time on social media.

I rarely even check Google+ - it seems more like a Tumblr/photoblog replacement for most people. And since I haven't posted much here, I'm amazed at the number of people who follow me here
