Pruning trees is vitally important for the health, safety, and appearance of the tree. Take a look at this diagram for a quick overview. First, locate the branch collar (the slight swell where the branch and the tree meet) - your final cut will be right outside of that collar. Doing this will ensure that the tree seals over the cut created. Branches under one-inch can most often be pruned with a single cut using by-pass pruners (by-pass pruners are very important). For harder wood trees or branches over an inch, use the three cut pruning method shown below. Making the first under cut and then the second over and through cut ensures that the weight from the branch will not rip the bark down the entire trunk of the tree causing a major wound.
