I often hear folks lament: "What can we do?" My answer is to avoid the unnecessarily complex answers meant to obfuscate and do my best to share what Thomas Jefferson called the "common sense of the matter". Here's a bit about my latest effort in time for July 4th:
Prepare for July 4th with Creating the Declaration of Independence.
Our nation is divided and personal celebrations have taken over the substance of America’s most notable national celebration, the 4th of July. Overshadowed by parades, barbecues and fireworks, little reflection looks upon the dramas preceding that fateful day in 1776. Scant thought is given to the reason for our country and the core event, publication of the Declaration of Independence. Celebration of our common heritage can be the celebration which can bridge this divide. Learning and sharing about the heritage, perpetuating the immense brilliance of it, brings Americans to the possibility of unity.
The book takes you into the minds of Richard Henry Lee, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in the weeks before July 4, 1776. Experience Lee's trepidation as he knows when he proposes American Independence to the Second Continental Congress that he is literally risking beheading. Join Adams and Jefferson at City Tavern as they begin crafting the Declaration and follow the story of how Jefferson came to reluctantly draft the Declaration when few others thought that Jefferson's assignment was important.

America's birthday should be more than fireworks and barbecues, it should be a time to study and reflect upon the creed that defined America expressed in the Declaration of Independence.
