Cozumel - Tourist Destination and Historical Mayan Island

A former law enforcement professional, Nicholas Tagarelli has more than three decades of experience with the New Jersey Police Department and the Port Authority of New York. He currently serves as the Security Director of Navillus Health in New Jersey. Nicholas Tagarelli enjoys travel in his free time to tropical locations such as Aruba, Cancun, the Bahamas, and Cozumel.

Cozumel, Mexico’s largest island, is 10 miles wide and nearly 30 miles long, and is situated 12 miles offshore from Playa del Carmen on the Yucatan Peninsula. Now a popular cruise and tourism destination, with snorkeling and white sand beaches, Cozumel Island played an important role in traditional Yucatan culture. The seafaring Mayans built temples to the goddess of fertility, Ix Chel, on Cozumel, where women made pilgrimages in open canoes to pay homage and leave offerings. Unfortunately, Hernán Cortés’ arrival in 1519 led to a decimation of the temples and a smallpox epidemic, which left the island nearly uninhabited by the end of the century. Today, Cozumel offers historical sites such as the San Gervasio ruins, where the fertility altar was located.
