Emory University Hospital is expected to receive a patient infected with the deadly Ebola virus within the next several days, the university announced Thursday.

'Experts on the Ebola virus expressed little concern that the virus would spread to other continents. CDC Director Thomas Frieden said an outbreak in the United States was “not in the cards.”'
It's an American missionary flying back to America to get treated in an isolated unit within walking distance of the CDC. I'm not yet worried...

Holy crap that's devastating. Even when (especially when!) you do as you've done here and let the song speak for itself. :-)

But wait! Act now, and for a limited time, the Vatican will throw in an ADDITIONAL seven years off purgatory. That's fourteen years, for the price of seven. You'll also receive a commemorative pendant key chain.
Papal court handling pardons for sins says contrite Catholics may win 'indulgences' by following World Youth Day on Twitter

Dear Pope Frank,

You're such a cool pope.  It is super awesome that you're hip to technology and social media as legitimate ways for people to connect and participate in spiritual community.  May I make a suggestion?  I'd find it super helpful if the Vatican website could offer some kind of sin/indulgence Purgatory estimate calculator to assist me in planning for the near-term hereafter.  I mean, I understand there's a certain level of mystery about the eternal judgments of God and faith and stuff, but you guys are clearly in the loop to be able to offer these quantifiable estimates of how things might shake out if I take the proper steps-- with sincere faith and spiritual fruit, of course.  It would be great if you would offer a simple online tool where I could input my various sins, have the appropriate "years in Purgatory" value assigned to them, and then look at various options for indulgences to bring the total down as close to zero as possible.  Like, can I climb the holy steps repeatedly and get the same number of years off each time?  Or is it a one time deal?  Maybe subsequent attempts could be offered at 50% off?  OR is spiritual exercise like physical exercise in that I get better and stronger the more times I do it-- so let's say 7 years off the first time, 10 the second time, and so on and so forth.  However, if it turns out that I'm looking at something like 500 years in Purgatory, and I can only get a couple dozen of them dismissed if I'm really disciplined, then I might just want to go live it up as much as possible for now with shopping, chocolate, television, and wine, ya know-- nothing bad; just REALLY enjoy myself; because what's 20-something years off of a 500 year Purgatory sentence, really, when I COULD live out the rest of my natural life doing the stuff that I feel like doing instead of doing weird stuff in exchange for indulgences?  Just some thoughts from a Gen-X chick.  Thanks again and see you on Twitter!

Jess

Good heavens, this is frightening.  Ebola in an international airport, dozens of exposed persons unaccounted for, up to a three week incubation period.  http://www.mydailynewswatchng.com/ebola-victims-death-fg-lagos-launch-manhunt-co-passengers/?_ga=1.244639429.1308561048.1404785093

In all honesty, the #1, "I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me," is something I find incomprehensible, nearly on the level of gibberish. What does "true to myself" even mean? Is oneself the ultimate arbiter of what we ought to do in life? Because my self wants some pretty screwed up crap a lot of the time.
Shouldn't I - as a Christian - embrace the hard duties that are set before me, knowing that "happiness," "feelings," "the self," and things like that are worthless poisons to chase in this life, but will be re-created in perfection in the next?

Being Evangelized Again, by Alan Hirsch:

"For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus." ~ Galatians 3:26-28 NLT

There can be no doubt that the Gospel addresses race, politics/economics, and gender at their very roots.   Whatever previous categories that existed on these levels are fundamentally transcended and completely redefined in Jesus. The particularly far-reaching nature of this Scripture is realized when we put it back into its original context:

For a Jew, the Israel/Gentile divide goes to the very epicenter of Israel’s identity and religious consciousness--the covenant of YHWH and Israel, election, the mission of Israel, etc. Paul is saying here that these previously well defined religio-racial categories have been completely transvaluated and transcended in Christ.  One can no longer put national or racial identity above what it means to be one in Christ.  National and racial identity are at best secondary to the always-primary Christian identity.

For the ancient world, the entire socio-economic system was dependent on the enslavement of whole nations and particular peoples.  Slavery was by no means peripheral but lay was at the very heart of the social, political, and economic system. The Gospel-realignment spoken about in this text has hugely transformative implications for the understanding of human dignity, of justice, and the ethics of what it means to buy and sell humans beings.  It also has implications for our understanding of oppression, human freedom, and liberty.

As far as gender goes, this annulment of pre-Gospel categories of gender radically addresses the issue of the status of women in a patriarchal society, and because of this, must include a complete reassessment of how power and the associated roles are both perceived and distributed socially. This is still radical today, but it was almost unthinkable in the original context.  This is a far-reaching as it goes because it reverses the curses placed on the original humans in the Fall. In Christ, a woman is no longer the property of a man, nor is she legitimized by him.  They both find the identity and legitimacy in Jesus--they both have completely equal status and significance in Christ.  On the other hand, a man need no longer strive to be defined by what he does; his calling and identity are changed in union with Christ.  Now he need not dominate nor live by anxious labor--he is accepted and acceptable.

It's amazing to me that we have had this text as long as we have had the Bible and yes we have seldom lived it out in ways that are consistent with its truth.  It took us 17 Centuries to officially outlaw slavery.  Racism still persists.  As for issues of gender, many men still think that women are in fact secondary citizens of the Kingdom.

God help us, but I think we still need to hear the Gospel! We need to be evangelized again.
