Wow people are really trying to keep this story stirring, of course Alex is upset about it, but I don't think he's bitter or has anything against Kaep

Photo Sphere // Petra from Above
www.colbybrownphotography.com

This is a Photo Sphere I took from a ledge over looking the Roman Colosseum in the ancient city of Petra in Jordan.

I am working on an in depth "how to" blog post on Photo Spheres that will be out soon.

Ancient Pre-Internet Society -- Prodigy Commercial Circa 1990

Here's a flashback for those old enough to remember endless CD's in the mail.  And yes, although the Internet existed in 1990, the general public still didn't know about it. Instead, there was America Online, Compuserve, and the inimitable Prodigy Service...delivered at blistering 2400 baud speeds:)

article about Ray directly joining Google...
--------
"singularities": sometimes (still) people (journalists, with editors even) get confused about the word "singularity" and presume special meaning, mythical history, novel origins and even religious stature to a word that generally means "unpredictability".

Singularity is a term from math & physics, used in publications as early as 1915, early used in publication by german physicist Schwarzschild related to a theoretical sizing of an event horizon around a black hole as calculated/predicted using Einstein's field equations and general relativity...

"a singularity" generally means some combination of circumstances changing such that a "classically predictive" theory becomes "unpredictable"... one would think writers might Google the word or read the Wikipedia articles about it... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Schwarzschild or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematical_singularity or even 1 divided by 0 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singular_support

Hahaha thanks guys :-D

We just returned from a seven day Caribbean cruise (our first cruise ever) featuring speeches and seminars by astronaut Steve Hawley, a Mayan expert, several scientists and a pair of sci fi authors (Rob Sawyer & me), climaxing in 200 skeptics climbing a Mayan tomb in order to stave off the end of the world - the very moment it was supposed to happen - by standing there, shaking our heads and going "naaaaah!"

According to Uri Geller and most charlatans (and my story "Those Eyes") skeptics ruin the vibe so that the magic fails. Good! So thank us for staving off doomsday. You're welcome!

You Promised Me Mars Colonies. Instead, I Got Facebook

A great article, Why We Can't Solve Big Problems from this month's Technology Review.   http://goo.gl/4K0Io

That something happened to humanity's capacity to solve big problems is a commonplace. Recently, however, the complaint has developed a new stridency among Silicon Valley's investors and entrepreneurs, although it is usually expressed a little differently: people say there is a paucity of real innovations. Instead, they worry, technologists have diverted us and enriched themselves with trivial toys.

The motto of Founders Fund, a venture capital firm started by Peter Thiel, a cofounder of PayPal, is "We wanted flying cars—instead we got 140 characters."
