Event based encounters that trigger when players reach certain locations are ok if they are set as "random monster encounters" that are predesigned for a location. I think they are quite reasonable with the sense of the encounter. I.e. If it's something that probably happens at least a few times a year or more is perfectly appropriate that it happens the hour the PC's pass through. If it's a case of the ancient wards finally failing the minute the PS's step into the clearing after 10 millenium of wear and tear..., then I agree with your complaint
