The Malign Hand of the Markets

This website is built on WP using the Max Magazine theme. I've changed the background, the menu and link colours, made the logo and advert, and added the quote from the book the site is primarily advertising. The client wants to promote all his writings and his blog.

Plugins

BPS security, Anti-spam, and Tiny MCE. I've used the theme's "add your own code" section to make the changes to the link colours and the font size, and to add the box shadow and rounded corners. The theme provides the carousel and slider, which, in this screenshot, is in mid-transition.

Theme choice

I chose Max Magazine because it's mobile-friendly and because it's the right choice for the content and the client's desire to promote his other writings. Both the slider and the carousel run off blog categories. As more content and images are added by the client, I can change the category on the carousel to showcase his latest blog posts or whatever else he wants to do with it. When you've got a lot of stuff to promote and want to make the information immediately available, you need a carousel or slider — or both — to display it.

It's important to base your theme choice on your content, not your preferences. Responsive was my original choice, but then I thought the client was primarily interested in advertising The Malign Hand of the Markets first and foremost. It was when he told me that he wanted to draw attention to his other works that I chose Max Magazine. You need to have a lot of content and images for Max Magazine to work as intended. Otherwise, there's no point in using either the slider or the carousel, in which case you might as well use another theme.

Flavio Pezzini keeps giving me work for the Kilndrying forum! :D

Just finished my latest job for him on ODesk. He needed a widget to display their job listings and I added a new mod to make the details show up as intended.

FYI I learned my trade customizing the appearance and functionality of forums and blogs and can work with any PHP-based applications program. #webdesign.

This is my WordPress work. Perspective Therapy and Gadget Force both use responsive themes. The rest are fixed-width magazine themes.

Costume Profits — dummy site

This is a dummy site I ran up for a customer. It's standard practice for me. The idea is, I take a deposit and make you a dummy site you can check out and play with. When you decide you like it, I upload it to your host and add the content there. Since I build from the content out I need real content to build from.

A strong foundation

It's the content that gives a site its look and feel more than the layout, colours and fonts. In this case, the client gave me very little so I had to use what she gave me, present it to its best advantage, and add some dummy text to fill it in. Build from the content out, get your message across in the first glance, and provide a strong call to action. I've actually got three here because there are three things the client wants to do; sign people up to a newsletter, get them to take part in a contest, and sign up for her ebook report.

Once you've sorted out the information hierarchy (no one ever visited a website to gaze at the carefully-crafted logo, trust me on this), you need to choose a layout. Bear in mind that most people use mobile devices to browse the internet. In this case, I've chosen the Responsive theme because it's mobile friendly and displays the information to the best advantage. It's free, which, unlike the proprietorial premium themes, permits me to add whatever plugins I want and doesn't hide the code away where I can't get at it. This is important if I want to make changes to the look and feel. Premium theme designers can get very precious about their themes and don't give you a lot of leeway if you like the layout but want to change the header fonts.

Plugins, colours, and code

I usually add Tiny MCE Advanced but I've taken to adding security and anti-spam plugins to protect my clients. The latest WP versions have built-in protection but I don't like to take chances. Since I've got no real content to work with yet, I'll have to hold off on other features. The costume contest will require a gallery, carousel or slider at some point. That can either go in the widget boxes on the next level or I can change the featured heading sizes and move that video, then stick a slider in the box where the video is.

The best plugin for fonts is the Cufon one. This will show the fonts up well on older browsers. I'm using Fabrics for the featured header and subheader, and Delios for H3.

I've changed the background and the menu. Responsive gives you a place to add your own CSS, which I've been gleefully exploiting.

These are my blog post graphics. Some of them were used in guest posts. Others were for my own blog.

Dynamic Heights Training

Built on Blogger, would you believe? Mumba wanted free hosting and a design overhaul. It also had to be mobile-ready. There's a Nivo Slider script generator you can use to add the slider to individual posts or pages. I've got two. One for the home page and one for the mobile version.

See it on www.dynamicheights.org.uk

My latest job. The logo was made by the client's friend and that's what she wanted to have there. She insisted on the maroon colour. Well... my tagline is "Your website — your way." It's a work in progress as I'm waiting for more content from the client.
