Upgrade Notes  -

spoiler warning: if you're using testing and just upgraded

systemd 214-2 -> 215-1 and
filesystem 2014.06-2 -> 2014.07-1

you might want to run "mkinitcpio -P" before rebooting!

after seeing this on the arch-general mailing list i read
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=183796 and had no further problems.

+phanisvara das The only issues I ran into recovering from a backup were updating the UUIDs in my fstab and needing to reinstall the bootloader. I did use Clonezilla, but want some of my machines to be up for read access while I'm creating the backup, so I switched to just using dd. Not as fast as Clonezilla, but I can do it over SSH to my headless server without any extra software. Also, setting up a cron task for a daily/weekly/monthly dd is of course dead simple for a desktop or server with drives to spare.

this is in german, no idea how well google this page translates. i find it very interesting though: a look at the rabid surveillance practice in all developed nations, from a new -- and alarming -- perspective:

of course.
Huge volumes of private emails, phone calls, and internet chats are being intercepted by the National Security Agency with the secret cooperation of more foreign governments than previously known, according to newly disclosed documents from whistleblower Edward Snowden. The classified files, revealed today by the Danish newspaper Dagbladet Information in a reporting collaboration with The Read more

+Claire Farron, far as i remember you're using (at least) aurora from heftig's repo on pkgbuild.com too.

i'm getting an error when pacman tries to connect: "failed retrieving file 'heftig.db' from pkgbuild.com : Failed to connect to pkgbuild.com port 80: Network is unreachable."

i can still connect to the web interface and download the updated packages manually though. this happened earlier but then 'fixed' itself after a day or two. this time, it's been going on for ~ a week already.

am i the only one, or is heftig's repo having problems?

makes sense if you change things from default; otherwise, why take the trouble?

heftig's repo came up again, btw. still don't know if it's my network connction from the indian boondocks, or trouble with his repo. don't really care though, since there are other options.

thanks to everybody who wished me a happy birthday -- even though these anniversaries aren't as much fun as they used to be when i was eager to grow up. now, at my (felt) age of 110, or 57 in calendar years, it's rather like counting down to the finish...

don't worry; i never 'wish' people on their b-days, nor do i give any importance, attention, or thought to mine. it's a habit difficult to break for many, but i haven't cared for it in a long time. stopped doing so when i grew out of being a kid & presents stopped coming in from relatives on the occasion.

strange thing happening with chromium & HTML5 videos:

watching when running a full KDE session doesn't heat up the system much. watching the same movie under awesome, CPU temp. soon creeps into 80 C, when i stop the process.

looks as if HW acceleration of the GPU (opensource radeon) wasn't utilized under awesome. i did start all the KDE processes that aren't automatically started outside a KDE session, and can't figure out what makes chromium behave different.

this does not happen when i use adobe flash, btw. any ideas?

i have compton installed but wasn't running it at the time. running it doesn't make a differenec though.

chrome://gpu tells me that i have no hardware acceleration, neither for 3D CSS nor webGL. makes sense that that heats up the CPU, but KWIN seems to deal better with it. probably better choice of software rendering.

chrome://gpu also gives me a list of problems which i'll have to look into; probably related to using the opensource radeon driver. nothing really disturbing though, since i can watch those movies (that aren't really important to begin with) in flash, which works fine in awesome as well as KWIN.

it's so obvious, even some of the 1% group get it & acknowledge it. makes you wonder what the real objective is in this game...

of course, if people insist to feed their food through animals before eating it, and living in ever-increasing luxury and waste, there may be scarcity of resources; but that's plain stupidity.

otherwise the earth is an eco-system that's able to provide for it's inhabitants. take the factory out of farming, and the animals out of the food chain. eat the stuff that's growing near you, don't insist on ex- and importing it across half the world.
