I am committed to promoting human happiness, the most important contributing factor to which is peace of mind. And the best way to achieve that is to cultivate compassion. All the major religious traditions advocate love and compassion. Meanwhile, scientists have revealed evidence that basic human nature is compassionate—so there is real hope.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama joins in inter-faith prayers for world peace at Grossmünster Church in Zurich, Switzerland on October 15, 2016. His Holiness speaks in English with a German translation available. Many of the participants speak in both English and German.

I feel we should make a personal commitment to promoting inter-religious harmony and to cultivating compassion within ourselves. In our materialistic world money seems all important, but much more valuable if we want to lead a happy life is to cultivate warm-heartedness. This is what strengthens the inner peace that anger and jealousy so easily destroy.

The only thing that will bring happiness is affection and warmheartedness. This really brings inner strength and self-confidence, reduces fear, develops trust, and trust brings friendship. We are social animals, and cooperation is necessary for our survival, but cooperation is entirely based on trust. When there is trust, people are brought together—whole nations are brought together.

Someone may be rich and powerful, but without friends they trust they’ll never be happy. Someone else may be poor, but surrounded by friends they trust they’ll always be happy. Showing concern for others is the best way to make friends and fulfil our own interests. We are social animals; we need to be warm-hearted and to take care of others. And to do that we need to remember what we have in common as human beings.

On a simple human level we are all equal. The first of my personal commitments is to work to increase human happiness by encouraging the cultivation of inner values and a sense of concern for others’ well being. These are the key factors to make us happy whether we are religious or not.
