Profile of European Union members: Slovakia
Slovakia, located in central Europe, joined the European Union in 2004 and the eurozone in 2009. With a population of just over 5.4 million, it is comprised of 85.8% Slovaks, 9.7% Hungarians and 1.7% Roma.

The country is steeped in history with archaeological artifacts dating back as far as 270,000 BC.

Some famous Slovaks include Jozef Murgaš [who contributed to development of wireless telegraphy], Ján Bahýľ [who constructed the first motor-driven helicopter (four years before Bréguet and Cornu)]. Štefan Banič [who constructed the first actively used parachute] and Aurel Stodola [who created a bionic arm in 1916 and pioneered steam and gas turbines].
