One Day I'll Poop Alone
So, one of the most unexpected side effects of motherhood (so far) has been my inability to poop alone. And maybe inability isn't the right word. Certainly, I am capable of pooping alone (I don't have, like, a co-dependent colon that refuses to do anything ...

Searching for the Sounds of Silence
So yesterday, Brad and I thought we'd attempt to jumpstart a family New Year's Day tradition by taking a walk together as a family. We headed for a path that wends its way through the peninsula of trees dividing various suburban enclaves of Herndon. Inspire...

Treating Myself to Myself On My (Almost) Birthday
Here's a picture of me with Amadeo. I generally hate pictures of myself and  avoid sharing them, but I like this one.   It's the eve of my birthday, so naturally I'm feeling a bit reflective. I'm also feeling like a bit of a flight risk as   Santa's Marchin...

Being Mr. Bucket
Kristopher Avila /Flickr The other night, while screwing the cap back on to the toothpaste I had an epiphany. I am Mr. Bucket. Poor Mr. Bucket,as you might recall from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," is the sole provider for a family of seven, includin...

Be still my raging brain
Photo courtesy of TrailSource.com /Flickr Last week, given the overall dismal state of my mental affairs, I decided I was long overdue for a yoga class. The last class I'd gone to was in York and I came out of it with a new way of thinking about my then-imp...

Homecoming and Hopecoming
I was sitting at Jovie's preschool orientation last week and I wanted to disappear. I wanted my face to not by my face. To somehow melt off into some nondescript other. Someone else. I wanted to take up as little space as possible. Last year at preschool or...

When enough is actually enough
Meet Natalie.  She's a snowman – correction, she's a snowgirl – snow gauge. Jovie says you can tell she's a girl because of the shape of her mouth. See, very feminine. Jovie made Natalie in preschool. She brought her home last week, chattering nonstop about...

How My Girls Showed Me that Life is the Shit

In search of serenity in the suburbs
I've been craving nature. Well, more accurately, I've been craving solitude in nature. After having read "Wild" last year, I've been fantasizing about running away on an epic toe-nail dropping, armpit hair growing solo trek through the wilderness in search ...

Story
Tagline
Mom. Journalist. Blogger. Part-time farmhand.
Introduction
If you stick around here long enough you'll learn my two little girls are among the wisest people I know despite the fact that they often struggle to be reasonable about basic human functions. I've been a writer of bad poetry since third grade, a writer of of news and features stories since high school and a blogger since 2007ish. Occasionally I write fiction. Mostly, I attempt to unearth little joys while shoveling horse poo, observing small people and celebrating calamity.
Bragging rights
In sixth grade I took first place in a speed jumping contest. To this day it is the only blue ribbon I have for sporting pursuits.
