good in-depth report of what's being done now:

The partial withdrawal of BPA from plastic products is the culmination of two decades of research linking the compound — which mimics sex hormones called oestrogens — to adverse health effects. But BPA is still a constituent of many food containers, especially cans. And when companies did abandon BPA, they often adopted alternatives that share much of the same chemistry and raise many of the same concerns as BPA.

When toxicologists warned that the plastics ingredient BPA might be harmful, consumers clamoured for something new. But problems persist.

ty ...the can lining in the foods we eat is still our biggest source of daily BPA. While it is now the most common coating on all paper and cardboard, we don't tend to eat as much of that. On paper goods it is used to prevent moisture from causing paper products to stick, and also to give a protective coating to the printing. But as the article mentioned, BPA free does not mean problem free. The problem still exists that manufacturers are not CHOOSING to take responsibility for the health risks caused by the packaging of their product. And yes, it is a choice. So far our FDA, EPA and other government run agencies, have made no rules as to the safety of the lining of cans, or packaging materials used in our foods. BPA is the most common, but it is very similar to the alternative chemical, plastic, coatings being offered. All coatings, containers, packaging, etc....that touches our food, MUST be safe to eat.

This just in:

HEADS UP: The U.S. FDA has proposed its first regulations on e-cigarettes. The rule would immediately make the products off-limits to kids under 18 and would require makers to disclose to the agency what they contain. The FDA did not propose - for now - limiting Internet sales or television advertising. http://trib.al/fQMs9BK
