One question for my new customer service book, which of course is due today: Can you give me examples of a company who has done something totally nice and totally unexpected for you, without you doing anything to provoke it? For instance, a bakery you haven't ordered from in a while sending you a cupcake just to remind you they were still there, or your contractor stopping by to say hi "just because he was in the neighborhood?"

Any and all examples, from both big and small companies welcome! Thank you! :)

Wiley X just did something that fits what you are looking for.
I bought a pair of their sunglasses about two years ago. Somewhere along the line I broke one of the arms. My fault nothing to do with the product. I looked on their website to see if I could buy a replacement. Couldn't find it. So I filled out their contact form asking if a local dealer could replace the arm for me.
Within two hours I got an email saying that they were sorry to hear I had broken an arm and that if I told them the model and my mailing address they would send me a pair of arms, complimentary.
This they did within a couple of days.
Awesome way to keep a customer and ensure I'm a customer for life.

Good read. You are emulating why we work for ourselves. It's not that we work less (on the contrary); the point is that we enjoy life NOW instead of postponing living life the way we want until "vacation" or retirement.

Whenever I give a speech or a talk, people constantly ask me the secret to "building buzz" for their business. While there is no real secret, (just create content to which your audience relates,) there IS a secret in making sure that content is shared by the right people, so it continues to grow and drive revenue for you and it starts with respecting the audience you have. With that said, I teamed up with the lovely people at Skillshare, and created an online class to show you exactly how to do that. And until the end of the month, you can get it for 10% off the cost, because you guys are my friends, and I love you. :) http://skl.sh/1eYZzuN, and the code is JESSA10. It expires at the end of the month. Enjoy :)

Husband, Father, Cat Father, Entrepreneur, CEO, Skydiver, Ironman... Told I'm smart about customer service, marketing, PR, advertising, and social media.
Introduction
PR Week Magazine has described Peter as “redefining the art of networking”, and Investor’s Business Daily has called him “crazy, but effective”. Peter Shankman is a spectacular example of what happens when you merge the power of pure creativity with  Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a dose of adventure, and make it work to your advantage.
Bragging rights
As far as I know, I'm the first person to text in free fall, and one of my tweets, randomly enough, wound up as one of the top ten tweets of 2011, as judged by ABC News and Twitter. See www.shankman.com for more.
