Ben Goldacre is a hero, and the pharma industry and the scientific publishing industry are completely rotten.

TED still sucks, but there are always exceptions, everyone should watch this.

Anyone using any Oracle product for anything is being willfully negligent and deserves to get hacked.

"Oracle engineers have corrected the problem in Oracle Database version 12 of the authentication protocol, but they have no plans to fix it in version 11.1, [...] Even in version 12, the vulnerability isn't removed until an administrator changes the configuration of a server to use only the new version of the authentication system. Oracle representatives didn't respond to an e-mail seeking comment for this story."

In other fields this is known as a security racket.

#oracle
Weakness makes it trivial for attackers to crack Oracle Database user passwords.

"Unlike previous aircraft, such as the F-22, all software for the F-35 is written in C++ for faster code development."

Seems to be working right according to plan, Bjarne's plan: http://harmful.cat-v.org/software/c++/I_did_it_for_you_all

Or perhaps his secret plan was to end all wars by making procurement of new weapon systems impossible.

And anyone heard of The Mythical Man Month? Nah!

"Because of this delay and the increased complexity of the jet's third and final software block, Lockheed Martin and the Defense Department have added additional resources to fielding Block III software"

No, this is not the bug people were complaining about two weeks ago, this is a new one included in the update that took forever that supposedly fixed that bug.

Anyone still using Java for anything deserves to get hacked, and have their corpse feed to rabid dogs.

Discovery is the latest black eye for the security of the widely used Java.

The real world sucks, and deluding yourself about it is not always a good idea, specially if you want to change it.

on page 12 it writes: "McIlroy’s map,
intended to display the earth on dozens of projections (v7), was used by McMahon to portray the heavens." does anyone have some info on this?

No.
In the late 90s the majority web of developers seemed to believe that the only proper way to link to a webpage was by running some messy JavaScript code. There were websites where pretty much all navi...

I keep trying to move away from chrome et al, but I just can't get away with it. My classes use blackboard for one thing, which requires so much crap to do so little.

Another day in the land of the Unmitigated Egregious Fucked Interface, aka #UEFI.
ITSEC analysed the UEFI platform now that Microsoft has ported old BIOS and MBR's boot loader to the new UEFI technology in Windows 8. Andrea Allievi, a senior security researcher at ITSEC, was able t...

If you are trying to escape the JavaScript wat-hell, be careful, CoffeeScript will give you a magical sugar overdose.

#languages   #coffeescript   #wat   #javascript
Most of the bad code examples in this post are taken from the CoffeeScript compiler itself. For that I have to say "mea culpa". There's a lot of overly clever and dense bits that have accrued in the c...

Need to remember still that underneath it are the same javascript catches.
As for the readability: it permits more than is appropriate (for readability); and what is not appropriate does not have to be used; but, figuring out what is appropriate after all is quite a problem.
(I should also note that coffeescript managed to implement few things I found lacking in Python, e.g. YAML-like notation inside the code)

The mafia had more scruples than Myhrvold and his thugs at his (anti)Intellectual Ventures racketeering business. Calling him a "patent troll" is too kind.

What is disturbing is how nobody questions his claims of altruism. Not only has nothing actually useful ever come out of his supposedly charitable efforts, but they were not charitable at all, they were paid for by others!

This reminds me of violent criminals who 'find faith' while imprisoned, except in this case the criminal isn't even behind bars. He's out in public harming people while claiming to do good like some s...

Here's a big shout-out to "ISO Master" and Andrew Smith. I had an old Mac Mini that simply absolutely would not install any of the newer Linux…
