a friend of mine recommended this book to me a long time ago and eventually *gifted me a copy of it* - knowing that i would be too lazy to buy it myself anytime soon.

here's a few of my personal highlights and need-to-remembers of this book:
- music in workplace: research at Cornell University has shown that programming in a noisy environment makes you less productive - whereas listening to music does *not*. however, listening to music makes you *less likely to come up with creative (read, smart) solutions* to a problem. this is because music occupies the right side of your brain
- work-to-rule: this is a form of strike where workers follow their guidelines exactly to the rule - making them unproductive and slow. the authors of the book used this as an argument against strict methodologies (they do not refuse them altogether, but suggest not to take them too serious)
- Hawthorne Effect: productivity in a factory increased when for example lighting conditions were changed - both when lighting was reduced and increased. not really sure what to think about this one, but it was one of many interesting analogies used in the book

thank you +Philipp Raich!
