Utah Fishing Reports

So I gave the Weber a shot today even knowing that it was going to be a dud due to the clear skies and steady barometer. What I hadn't counted on making it even worse was how amazingly cold it was - and I was expecting cold. It was 3 degrees when I got there and the river was mostly frozen over! The only open areas I could fish were the runs between the pools and along the ice's edge at the top of the pools. To make matters worse the water temp was also very cold - normally when the guides on my flyrod freeze up I just swish the rod tip in the water for a few seconds and it melts off. However, due to the water temp being so far below freezing the ice would build up more on anything I put into the water - including my fly. The guides I could take care of by breaking the ice off carefully (not a good idea really) but for my fly I had to come up with something else. So I pee'd on it. A lot. Seriously like every 10 minutes - damn good thing I took a bunch of water with me.
I did manage to get a few very sluggish strikes, lost one, and landed one on my new tube flies I tied up this week. I'm very happy with how they worked out, but I think I'll be happier with them when it's warmer!

Unfortunately the first post I'm going to put on this page is of the recent report from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources stating that spores from the whirling disease parasite were recently discovered in two Kokanee salmon. This isn't a total surprise to me as in my opinion it was just a matter of time. I am going to remain hopeful that the impact on the fishery is minimal.
