The debt limit bill that just passed the House creates a powerful new joint committee (the "Super Congress"), with enormous power to recommend large cuts to the House and Senate. The committee's recom...

weird google plus feature: replying to something someone else has shared, I can't tell who can see it. You're in an undefined social zone.

Agreed - it feels strange. Has definitely added an element of "I wonder what circle I'm in here?" to content. Not sure if that's good or bad. Just interesting and different so far.

Sunlight is ramping up our effort to get the new "Super Congress" committee to be as transparent as they are powerful. We have honed yesterday's blog post into five requirements, and today we're sendi...

As Byron York just pointed out, the debt limit bill is being urgently rushed through Congress, and Members of Congress only have a few hours to read the bill. (It was apparently posted online at about...

about to open a can on this story. such BS!

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/20/us/politics/20freshmen.html?_r=1&hp

see this:

http://sunlightfoundation.com/blog/2011/03/07/where-is-obama-on-bushs-earmark-transparency-executive-order/

or this:

http://www.opencongress.org/wiki/Earmark_Reform_Bills#Earmark_Evasion

In short, the earmark ban in a complete sham, and has made earmarks far less accountable, even as we had a tenable solution in hand for dealing with them. And Obama has completely ignored an executive order from Bush (!) that requires agencies to either ignore of post Members' requests online.
House Republicans who rode a wave of voter discontent into office last year may be pushing for spending cuts, but they’re also quietly funneling millions of federal dollars back home.

to be fair, we won't default. probably treasury will just issue more debt if it comes to it. no one will really be able to stop it. And the Fed can probably effectively print money. Sure there will be a constitutional crisis, but I don't think that the lights will go out.

Not that we shouldn't address it the right way.
