According to this Wikipedia page, king Charles the Bald went to war against his brother Lothair. Which has to be a joke - it's like the very worst in 80s fantasy names. (It's not a joke.)

This wasn't a scam, it was a systematic attempt to demonstrate how broken everything is. It worked better than expected.

http://io9.com/i-fooled-millions-into-thinking-chocolate-helps-weight-1707251800
“Slim by Chocolate!” the headlines blared. A team of German researchers had found that people on a low-carb diet lost weight 10 percent faster if they ate a chocolate bar every day. It made the front page of Bild, Europe’s largest daily newspaper, just beneath their update about the Germanwings crash. From there, it ricocheted around the internet and beyond, making news in more than 20 countries and half a dozen languages. It was discussed on tel...

I've been a sikology student. Not only are most of them not able to respect language (so that spelling wouldn't surprise me much), but 95% of those who will graduate do so by "applying" their maths courses but don't understand stats at all. On the bright side, they made me discover I should teach for a living.

According to the BBC the Queen's speech contains, amongst other things: "a ban on so-called legal highs".

Erm... is it me, or does anyone else see a problem here? ;-)

<sigh> Prohibition is the only answer any government ever seems to consider 'politically acceptable' where chemical consumption is concerned, despite all the evidence proving that it is just utterly inefective and self-defeating, as well as nakedly showing off the prejudices of that government.

If it were measured on the pure basis of noticable harm, we'd have to ban alcohol in a heartbeat. And I'm pretty certain that worked really well in the US about a century ago...

The BBC will make the unemployed and low-paid workers compete against each other for a cash prize in a controversial Hunger Games-type show to find “Britain’s Hardest Grafter”.

+Chris Venus You know, I would systematically propose a link to http://www.urbandictionary.com/ in such cases; if many people weren't expressing their disapproval (and making me feel responsible) of a reality where most nouns being able to describe genitals et al.

Game rec: Snakebird.

Don't let the cutesy graphics fool you - this is a fairly challenging puzzle game with a really high standard of level design.

What is the longest possible length a bird can be? Obviously a question only all the fruit in the world can answer! But where could all this fruit be hiding? Follow Redbird, Greenbird and Bluebird on a quest for an amount of fruit beyond any birds wildest dreams.

If you follow any of my social media feeds you'll know I whinge endlessly about bad stats. Turns out someone else feels the same way and has written a book about it.

http://boingboing.net/2015/05/22/statistics-done-wrong-the-woe.html
From a brilliant Web-rant to an indispensable guide to the perils of statistics and their remedies, Alex Reinhart's Statistics Gone Wrong is a spotter's guide to errant nonsense cloaked in mathematical respectability.
