Some cities are know for their coffee shop scene (Seattle, NYC) and DC is not one of them. I am glad to say this is slowly changing with a coffee shop opening up in DC almost every month (woo hoo!). Still I think the best is Peregrine. It is right by the Eastern Market Metro and makes an amazing of coffee (best latte I've ever had in my life). There is not much seating, but the fact that this place is always full means it's good coffee. The pasties are good too as they get them from Buzz Bakery.

I went here with my girlfriend and now I love this place. We both had the same coffee heavily creamed and the formed a heart on it using the froth, it was nice and my girlfriend especially loved that. She was happy so I was happy. Aside from their excellent coffee, they had this huge assortment of baked goods. We just had the simple choco chip cookie but it was delicious. Will update this review when I go back another time

Try the Japanese Sancha green tea. It gives you an infusion of healthy energy good for several hours.

A standard coffee shop that's caught between being a chain and being a mom and pop shop. Can't go wrong but definitely has that chain vibe.

Good coffee. Great espresso. Around the same price as Starbucks.

Culturally and socially important Hill gathering spot with deadly serious coffee, nice baristas, nice music. Seating limited because the DC corps of consultants prefer it to working at home. Cell coverage limited in back, nice shaded front patio. Don't ask what's in the hot chocolate, but it's good. They occasionally host Thursday Night Throwdowns for barista misbehavior after closing time.

This coffeehouse is a must for coffee aficionados. Slow pour drip coffee is the best here with vivid names for their coffee beans. I ordered the "Robert Antonio Jarmarillo Camacho" coffee bean from Ecuador and was pretty much blown away. This location has plenty of seating inside and outside their coffeehouse and is just a stone's throw away from the Eastern Market.
