Last Item on the Agenda is really great. I've been an enthusiastic fan of this game for a long time; I've run it and helped Shawn lay it out. It is drawn from life and addresses some beautifully difficult subject matter with compassion and clarity. Highly recommended.

A Russian witch will mess you up. I'm working on a supplement! It will first appear as a stretch goal for the Gauntlet Kickstarter (happening now)...it is all about religion and folk magic, two things no self-respecting Soviet airwoman has any time for. I think it will make the game awful in a totally new way.

Super excited to offer this in support of The Gauntlet’s Kickstarter! The thing I’m proudest of is the way it introduces magic in a prosaic way. Magic isn’t real and nothing a koldunya does is genuinely supernatural. But combine intention with belief and anything is possible.
Night Witches: Koldunya

I wouldn't normally announce something like this on a Saturday, but I am presently slave to the vicissitudes of Kickstarter.

I am very excited to announce the newest stretch goal for the Codex Volume 1 Kickstarter: if we can hit $17,000, +Jason Morningstar will write Night Witches: Koldunya, the first major expansion for the award-winning Night Witches game. Here is Jason's description:

Religion was brutally suppressed in the pre-war Soviet Union, but both Orthodoxy and syncretic folk ways survived. The women of the 588th were a mix of true believers, cultural Christians, and atheists. All of them were familiar with the superstitious magic of the Russian countryside, and whether they believed in it or not, it was suffused in the air they breathed. Witches - koldunya - were real, and they could heal and curse. Even the staunchest Soviet atheist and most rational technocrat would think twice before crossing the path of one. Of course magic isn’t real, but intention is everything...

Night Witches: Koldunya adds two new Natures and a whole suite of witchcraft moves to the game. It gives you a background on religion and anti-religious efforts in the Soviet Union before the war, and allows you to add a strange and surreal veneer to your game.

The Jackdaw is a gregarious, easily distracted lover of light - a healer and soothsayer. The Nightjar, in contrast, is a solitary creature of darkness, often reviled and capable of great mischief. Both are koldunya, and both are full-fledged pilots and navigators within the regiment. Will they use their gifts in the service of God, the devil, the 588th or comrade Stalin?

This is, frankly, epic. I would be over the moon if we could hit this stretch goal, so please, please, please re-share and spread the word!

Busy Metatopia for me...

D020: "LARP for Tabletop Designers, Tabletop for LARP Designers" presented by Jason Morningstar, Jay Treat, Jacqueline Bryk, Tim Hutchings. Live action role playing offers all sorts of interesting insights and techniques that are ripe for poaching for tabletop games - and vice versa. We'll discuss the affinities, differences, and edge cases in these related mediums. Hopefully you will leave with some new ideas, regardless of which design space you think you operate in. Friday, 4:00PM - 5:00PM; Serious, All Ages.

This will be weird and fun and I will be moderating three people I love and respect.

D025: "So You Want To Be A Good Male Ally" presented by Jason Morningstar, Rob Donoghue, Jonathan Gilmore, Brand Robins. Have you heard your fellow designers and players speaking out against sexism and harassment in gaming and wondered what you could do as a man to help? Join us for a lively and surprising conversation about being a better ally. Friday, 6:00PM - 7:00PM; Serious, All Ages.

We've put together an extremely interesting panel and I hope everyone who identifies as male at Metatopia comes to hear the panelists talk!

D027: "Golden Cobra Announcement" presented by Jason Morningstar. The Golden Cobra Challenge is a friendly contest open to anyone interested in writing and playing freeform games that ran through the month of October. Now we're ready to discuss our methodology, submission trends, and what we've learned about freeform in the process. And, of course, announce the winners! Join us for an informal discussion and awards ceremony. The winning games will be offered throughout METATOPIA, so come play with the judges as well. Friday, 8:00PM - 9:00PM; Serious, All Ages.

The games this year are looking Real Good so far.

D059: "Immersive Theater, Interactive Theater and Public Play: What We Can Steal" presented by Jason Morningstar, Nicholas Fortugno, Amy Ashton, Marshall Bradshaw. Immersive theater, interactive theater, and public games all offer weird untapped potential for designers of all kinds of games. We've assembled a panel of experts in these disciplines that are adjacent to our own, and we'll see what we can learn and borrow from them. Saturday, 7:00PM - 8:00PM; Serious, All Ages.

I am most excited about this panel, in which I will moderate a discussion with three smart people who are adjacent to gaming but in their own worlds. I worked hard to snag 'em and bring them to Metatopia!

The Golden Cobra Challenge is live! Read all about it here:

http://www.goldencobra.org/

The contest runs from 24 September until 15 October and I hope you will submit a game.

There are four award categories:

Best Game About Something No One Writes Games About
Best Resilient, Scalable Game For 2 to 20 Players
Best Game That Teaches a Skill
Best Game That Embraces Multi-Generational Play

Four optional ingredients we hope you will find inspiration in and use:

Pillows, Collection, Masks, Mistakes

And three constraints:

1. Your game must support a flexible number of participants by accepting at least 5 different player counts. For example, a game that supports 3 to 7 players would be acceptable because it supports player counts of 3,4,5,6, and 7 but a game that only supports 8 to 9 players would not be (since it only supports two possible player counts).
2. Judges will read the first four pages of your submission (four total sides of 8.5x11 or A4 paper). Additional materials don't count toward this total, but the judges only commit to reading the first four. Consider adding designer's notes or a libretto as well!
3. Your game must be playable with zero to minimal prep.

Some things to note, and a request for help: We removed the two hour play time constraint, and we removed the length limit on submissions. This was done to encourage people for whom those constraints were conceptual deal-breakers (if you needed complex characters, for example, or four hours to play). So if you are part of design communities where the previous constraints were just non-starters, please ask your friends to take a look and see if this year's challenge is inspiring.

This year's Golden Cobra Challenge will begin fairly soon and run for two weeks! Get ready!

The Golden Cobra Challenge is a lighthearted contest for writing short live action games. It has produced some extraordinary games in the past, and this year's award categories, ingredients and constraints are the best ever. I'm very excited to see the games that emerge from this weird mix!

The winners will be announced, as always, at METATOPIA in early November.

+Whitney Delaglio's Kickstarter for Prism is live!

I got to play Prism at Gen Con and really enjoyed it. It is a weird game, and if you know me you know that's the highest praise I can offer.

Game Chef 2018 is live and I have a feeling we are going to see a lot of gritty sex-and-drug-themed games.

Ingredients: blunt, speedwalking, sheepskin, weigh

Turns out "speedwalking" is slang for the conspicuous dash home to cook after scoring meth.
