Do you think that MATE is a breakthrough or last century?
Linux bloggers have plenty of topics to write about every 6 months. These are release cycles for Ubuntu and Fedora families. Canonical and RedHat give us an opportunity to write reviews of their operating systems often enough to keep the blogs going. Many derivatives of these distributions add ...

You felt MATE was better looking than GNOME 2.

I looked and found I still had the following gnome 2 systems bootable...

openSUSE 11.4 (old evergreen; latest updates May-2016) - I prefer its GNOME 2.6 to MATE. openSUSE had their own menu as well which is very like MATE.

CentOS - yep here I agree; MATE is better than the simple GNOME 2 found in a very plain CentOS/RH offering

Fuduntu - here GNOME 2 wins; but I feel more because of the tweaks made to the gnome 2 by the Fuduntu devs.. It was a really nice distro; a shame it was based on Fedora; and its updates stopped not longer after EOL (even Fedora's repo's didn't add that much support).

Of course, "better looking" is very subjective.. but my take on these gnome 2 machines I have, say

GNOME+2
vs
MATE+1

Will Mandriva soul survive through its forks?
Mandriva was one of the most famous names in the Linux world just a few years ago. Unfortunately, the company behind that Linux distribution had some difficulties that inevitably created issues for the project. Mandriva Linux also became a base for several offsprings, derivatives, and forks.

Room was rather small. My one had a strange design with a window in the ceiling. There is no curtain on it, so not sure how one can sleep in it in short summer nights. Hotel stays away from civilization, so only good if your desire is to be alone. Otherwise you need a car to get anywhere.
