A day after my wife's operation, I got up early and headed down to the Vasco da Gama bridge. I was greeted with this sunset. It's like it was telling me that everything was going to be all right.

Can you believe this was actually used as a defence tower. This 16th century tower was equipped with cannon to blow enemy ship right out of the water. It's cool how back then everything was done with class. I got this one just before my wife went to do her chemo. She was asleep in the car right below those trees on the left.
This is actually a stitched image. So 6 images processed separately in photomatix then did the usual clean up by mixing in the originals and then some color correcting. After that stitched the final result and did some sharpening.

The Mafra National Palace. This is one of my favorite Portuguese monuments. When entering the town of Mafra you're greeted with this massive and beautiful structure. Inside there are so many rooms that it took me 10 minutes to go from one end to the other. It has inside one of the most beautiful libraries built with rare wood and marble floors. There are even bats living in the library. They are kept in boxes during the day and set free at night to eat insect that may destroy the books. This is also The last king of Portugal spent his last night here before fleeing into exile following the proclamation of the republic. But the coolest story linked to the palace is that giant rats, capable of eating people, inhabit the lower levels of the palace. I love this place.
So on a foggy summer night at around midnight, I grabbed my camera and took 3 shot from -2 to +2. I used photomatix to join all 3 shots and then in Photoshop blended in the original photos. Some color corrections were used and also some sharpening ( high pass filter) and that's about it.

This is the Vasco da Gama Tower in Lisbon. I grabbed this shot  Just I was leaving Lisbon, well, in reality I did take a little detour. OK, 3 shots ( -2 0 2) imported into lightroom to do some lens correction and some Chromatic Aberration fix then exported them as 16 bit tiff files. I used the 32 HDR function in Photoshop and the saved the final result as a tiff file. Then open the final tiff file in ACR to do some adjustments, then some blending with the original files (lots of masking) some color corrections and here's the final result.

Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca) is a cape which forms the westernmost extent of mainland Portugal and continental Europe (wikipedia). I took this shot in January in Sintra (district of Lisbon) after one of my wifes radiotherapy. I think it helped cheer her up. Anyway, it was one of those days that it finally stopped raining and we could enjoy a semi-beautiful sunset.

This is where my wife is being treated for her breast and bone cancer. I supposed to be one of the best research center in Europe.  Man, I hope there right.
Here's some info from Wikipedia: The Champalimaud Foundation is a private Portuguese biomedical research foundation, which aims to support the biomedical sciences, focused in particular, on the fields of neuroscience and cancer. In addition, the foundation's António Champalimaud Vision Award carries one of the highest monetary prizes (1 million Euros) of any science prize and is, financially, the World's largest in the field of vision. The Champalimaud Foundation is headquartered in Lisbon. The Champalimaud Foundation's high-tech research center, which opened in 2010 at the mouth of the River Tagus in Lisbon, features diagnostic and treatment units for cancer patients on the lower floors and research labs above, aimed at research on cancer and neuroscience.
