Today I learned a new word: накрутка (pronounced Na-krut-ka).

It means making up fake numbers to support a position by gaming a system.  For instance, if you use a bot-net to artificially make something trend on twitter.

Not exactly. A coworker mentioned the word and I realized that even though
there's no English equivalent it's a wide spread phenomena.

There's something deeply satisfying about command line mojo.

Perfect! Hit Enter to try the next level (or see if you can make it shorter for more points). You have all the original test cases covered, but I tried some at random and found . Hmm... loading, I hope? If this doesn't work, maybe the old version does?

P values, the 'gold standard' of statistical validity, are not as reliable as many scientists assume.

Who knew that average was so mind-blowingly beautiful?

I've started using Bing maps because the new Google maps is too slow.

Scientific papers that claimed stem cells could be made in the laboratory simply by dipping regular cells in acid didn't hold up under scrutiny. Now the work is being retracted because of errors.

I just managed to make a new Mac behave more or less like a linux box.  It's too bad that there's no good X11 browser for modern Macs (Links/Lynx is missing a few things).

Google, Yahoo and other major Internet companies use OpenSSL to protect your data transactions with them. Turns out a bug called Heartbleed has been exposing much of their data, and yours.

I had a really great experience buying a Mazda 5 at Mazda of Everett. They had exactly the car that I wanted, showed it to me directly, and they charged me a fair price without much hassle.

I've used Empire Auto for the last 5 or 6 years. Their prices are good and they stand by their work. I'm leaving the area and I don't know how I'll replace them.

I bought a used Focus here (paid cash) and opted to spend something like $1400 for the extended warranty. A few weeks later one of the struts broke. The charged me $100 to look over the car and then told me that my warranty didn't cover the strut... I canceled the warranty and haven't gone back. Since then I've had to replace all four struts and a bearing in the right front wheel. In short, they pretty much sold me a lemon and wouldn't make good on it.
