Proper digestion begins in the mouth

Healthy digestion and nutrient absorption starts with chewing your food.
Thoroughly chewing your food helps to break it down in to small particles and produce saliva, which contains necessary digestive enzymes. This begins the digestive process. To chew your food properly you need to have strong healthy teeth. When eating softer foods, it is recommended that before swallowing you chew 6-12 times and when eating more dense foods 20-30 times. This may sound like a lot but learning to slow down and enjoy your food while eating will not only improve your digestion it will also help you maintain good oral health. The saliva produced while chewing your food properly helps to clean up and clear out bacteria in the mouth. Less bacteria means there is a reduced risk of plaque buildup that leads to tooth decay.

To keep your teeth in optimal health so you can chew your food properly for many years, be sure to schedule and keep your preventative checkups every six months with Dr. Leslie Anthony.

Taste buds contain receptor cells that are found on your tongue and allow you to experience tastes that are sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. The average adult has between 4,000 to 10,000 taste buds in total that are replaced about every 10 days.

It is unlikely that you will get sick with the same illness but sometimes other viruses and bacteria can linger on your toothbrush. You may run the risk of developing a new illness or contaminating your loved one’s toothbrush that is stored close by. It is best to replace your toothbrush after you have become sick.

Healthy mouth tip
It is best to replace your toothbrush every 3 months. After 3 months, the bristles start to break down and become much less effective at removing plaque.
