The less the sleep the more problems we have. Between smartphones, ipads, laptops and streaming movies it's easy to sleep less. The price you pay eventually shows up on your face.

Rosacea is a pretty much misunderstood skin condition. It's controllable and there are procedures to minimize its effects on the skin - particularly enlarged blood vessels. The key to the best Rosacea management is to recognize when it strikes, because this will give you...

A disturbing scenario is occurring in this country - the result of overuse of antibiotics. Public demand for antibiotics for every malady has only served to increase the mutation of bacteria, making many of the standard antibiotics less effective and in more and more cases, completely ineffective.

There are certainly situations which demand antibiotics and they can be life savers. But as a society, we need to pay more attention to the long term consequences of overuse of antibiotics and become more aware of what other options exist for various illnesses or conditions.

Which brings us to the subject of antibiotic use for acne. For decades the "Rx" for acne had been a sustained course of antibiotics. But that continuous use strategy is now known to create problems that are at least as problematic as acne itself.

Options for non-antibiotic treatment of acne, or a combination of short-duration antibiotic use and other treatments are proving to be viable choices with better and even faster results.

Photo Dynamic Acne has long been on the prescription pad at my practice. It is the arch-enemy of cystic acne and proves to be a safe alternative to antibiotics and the very problematic oral retinoids.

Anyone with acne which can't be controlled with simpler topical products should closely examine this alternative as it is proving to be a highly effective option.

Treatment for Under-eye Hollows

Today's consumer is flooded with special offers, rock bottom pricing and lures to get them in the door of a non-skin-based medical practice for what is essentially dermatology or plastic surgery territory. It's like going to your son's skateboard shop to get your Chrysler sedan problem fixed.

I suppose this post comes out of frustration. Yesterday I had not one but half a dozen patients come in who wanted "correction work".  Some I can fix, some I can't. A lopsided Juvederm lip augmentation is fixable. An overdone lip augmentation with silicone oil is not fixable. All I can do is send someone like that to a plastic surgeon and hope the surgeon can accomplish some natural looking reduction....at both great cost and pain to that patient.

It's distressing to tell a patient that I can't un-do a problem. But what's more distressing is knowing that there are so many medical practices out there that can legally provide dermatology and surgery treatments without the specialty training that makes those treatments safe, effective and aesthetically pleasing.

That said, there ARE a limited number of cross over specialists who go to great lengths to be proficient in cosmetic procedures. My best advice to anyone looking for appearance altering treatments is to do your due diligence.

We all have to become more aware and more educated consumers - in every facet.
