I didn't want to go to the doctor. I didn't want to go to PT. I wanted to run. More. Harder. Faster. Turns out you can't run very well on a fractured hip and psoas tendinopathy. My doc and colleagues had good things to say about Select Phys Therapy. I didn't care; I was busy pouting and hurting. Fine, I'll go to the appointment. My PT asked me a lot of questions and assessed the current situation, and sent me home with some exercise "homework". I was also ordered to rest. Rest?!? Fine, I'll follow directions. Matt certainly knew more about the human body than I did. Every week, I listened to Matt as he explained the mechanics of me in great detail. We did some strengthening exercises and slowly reintroduced some cardio. He answered my many questions and made sure I understood why we performed certain movements, and how I could incorproate those into my running program so I could be a better athlete. I learned about my anatomy, dynamic warmups, and how to workout without crossing the fine line of too much pain. He always made sure I was comfortable and balanced my care with his other patients. Over time, my hip healed. I stopped pouting. I started running again. After 12 weeks, I had to say goodbye to Select Physical Therapy and fly on my own. Incorporating the tools I learned from Matt, I completed a 40 minute walking/running 5k this week. My clicking IT band also finally fell silent for the first time in a year thanks to Matt's strengthening exercises. Watch out, 50k! I'm on my way. Slowly. Thanks also to Emily and Casey who work hard for the patients. Red River rocks!
