Construction doesn't just mean building new places, it can also mean remodelling and refurbishing older buildings. When it comes to our heritage architecture, refurbishment to make it fit for modern living whilst still protecting unique, much-loved places presents a challenge. With our help at Jamestown, Bourne Engineering was able to rise to this challenge and deliver an award-winning project at Farringdon Station. The Integrated Ticket Hall, new roof canopy and new concourse at Farringdon Station ensures that this busy station can cope with 21st Century travel whilst retaining its distinguished style and protecting our architectural heritage.

Jamestown worked with Nugent Manufacturing of Naas, County Kildare on two unusual and much-publicised projects. Diarmuid Gavin's gold-winning garden at the 2011 Chelsea Flower Show featured their enormous suspended Pink Pod, hanging 82 feet above a garden which also included steel pools.

The abstract artwork 'The Way Ahead' was created, using Jamestown's water-jet cutting, to designs by sculptor Bob Quinn. Inspired by Aoibh, mother of the Children of Lir, it stands by the N4 at Mullingar in Westmeath.

Jamestown have capabilities in the production of steel products that are out of this world.

Traditional conventions of how steel can be used does not limit what can be achieved. Size, curves, strength and durability are qualities that make steel an adaptable and flexible material and Jamestown relish the challenges posed by any new project.

Very Special Steel - from Game of Thrones to Jamestown

Deep in the forests of Qohor lives the tiny band of master-blacksmiths who are the only craftsmen still able to reforge Valyrian Steel into new weapons. Although the secret of making Valyrian Steel has been lost, the precious few pieces that survive can be made into swords capable of defeating the dreaded White Walkers.

Jamestown fabricated sixteen curved girders to reinforce the famous 'Flying Arches' across the railway line near Chorley in Lancashire.

The arches, which brace the high retaining walls on either side of the line, had been in place since the 1840s and are the last of their kind in Britain.

Each of the weathered steel beams had to be individually designed to match exactly, in width and curvature, the masonry arch which would later be rebuilt on top of it. The project won Network Rail's annual Heritage Award.

Jamestown supplied exceptionally large Weathering Steel Half-through bridge for a bridge project in Bolton, Lancashire. The Orlando Street bridge needed to be rebuilt to allow for the electrification of the railway line running beneath it. Working with J. Murphy and Sons Ltd., the infrastructure specialists, Jamestown supply included weathering steel plate girders 40 metres long, 3 metres deep and weighing 68 tonnes each. A full trial of the bridge was carried out at the Jamestown site using mobile cranes. The beams were then transported to Lancashire for erection on site. Jamestown were working on the project for six months.

The new Robin Hood Stand at the Leicester Tigers Welford Road rugby union ground includes 20 metre cellular beams supplied by Jamestown. The new stand needed to be ready in time for the new season, so the schedule was very tight, but Jamestown engineers were able to suggest improvements to the design specification which not only ensured that the work could be completed on time, but also allowed for cost savings. Jamestown’s partners in the project were MQM, the Leicester-based structural steel firm. The stand, which includes offices and a luxurious members' lounge, seats 6,000 fans, taking the stadium’s capacity to over 25,000.

Uncertainty about the political future, particularly in the City of London, has led to a lack of business confidence and therefore to hesitancy about new construction projects. At Jamestown, we are ready to meet the challenge of increasing our share of a smaller market. Our future success will depend on our key strengths, which are our flexibility and responsiveness to customers’ needs. Our apprenticeship scheme will address the skill shortage which is a problem throughout the industry, and we will also invest in the latest technology, such as our plasma profiling equipment.
