Very proud of Alliance Party colleagues, Anna Lo especially as well as Green Party MLA Steven Agnew in ensuring that this draconian amendment was not written into law. Whilst the Petition of Concern is not the most ideal mechanism, I am glad that Sinn Fein triggered it in order to prevent poor legislation from being enshrined in the Criminal Justice Bill. Regulation, support and oversight needed, not criminalisation. The legalisation of abortion on demand was not the order of the day, and Alliance remains committed to maintaining that neither pro-life or pro-choice is a defined policy, despite how several DUP and SDLP MLAs attempted to twist the debate.

The rise in the number of attempted terrorist murders of police officers and continuing loyalist street disorder across Northern Ireland will be discussed during a meeting between David Cameron and his Irish counterpart Enda Kenny in London today. As 3 PSNI officers narrowly escaped death and serious injury last night after an ambush bomb attack on the M5, the recent increase in dissident activity including the mortar attack in Derry/Londonderry that would have claimed dozens of lives, the rioting in Belfast and Glengormely and the attacks on Alliance party offices the FM and DFM are in Brazil. Leadership from Sinn Fein and the DUP is severely lacking.

Me (far right) and Cllr Andrew Muir talking to NI Secretary of State Theresa Villiers MP at the Alliance party conference on Sat 2nd March. I spoke to her about the lack of equal marriage legislation in NI and what she can do for the LGBT community here. I look forward to speaking with her again in my new role as Convenor of Alliance LGBT committee.

Given the ramping up of charged dialogue between the pro-life and pro-choice campaigns in NI over the proposed amendment on the Criminal Justice Bill, I thought I would re-post a piece I wrote back in October 2012 on this very issue.

Gun laws in the US are heading for a major overhaul should the Dems convince enough Republicans in the House to support the radical and much needed changes to the firearms laws in the wake of a horrific year of mass shootings. Sandy Hook and Aurora were the tipping point for many, as well as the attempted murder of Arizona senator Gabby Giffords in 2011 in Tuscon. Will they succeed?
