We travel a great deal and have stayed in many hotels and resorts around the world, but Hotel Sugar Beach is one of our all time favorites! We have been staying here for about 15 years and have been here 3 times this year with a fourth trip planned for next month! Every inch of this resort is naturally beautiful and very private. Every employee from the front desk to the restaurant staff goes well beyond expectations to insure every guest is well cared for. The restaurant is a delight. They have a varied menu that can accommodate most any dietary restriction ( vegetarian and gluten free selections). Last nite we had fresh grilled shrimp and fresh grilled mahi mahi. Both were divine! The beach at this resort is so lovely and so very private. Most of the time we are the only people in the entire beach! I challenge anyone to show me a more beautiful place on the planet!

We were fortunate enough to spend a few days here earlier this month (March 2012). It is such a relaxing location. The hotel and staff are wonderful. The food is very good and the sunsets are awesome! Head down the monkey trail from Potrero and keep going. It is quite the ride but worth it when you arrive. Great pictures of howler monkeys as well (every morning). It is Pura Vida!

If you are expecting the typical crowded, all inclusive, family friendly beach hotel, this is not the place to go. Instead, it is a nice, petite (boutique) hotel that is perfect for couples, young adults or adults that are expecting to have a relaxing time next to a quiet, beautiful beach with a more personalized service. Rooms are well equipped and clean, and depending on how much you are willing to pay, the luxury goes up. The pool is small but nice, with some chairs around it. The restaurant/bar doesn't have a lenghty menu, but the choices they have are really good, with big portions (you won't starve) and nice quality. I highly recommend the cocktails, and during happy hour you can get them at a nicer price :) The staff is friendly and very helpful also. The beach is beautiful, not crowded, water is a bit cold (not sure why), but sea is calm (won't suck you down with dangerous tides unlike other Costa Rica beaches) and has good waves :) although the sea bottom is a little rocky and you can get hurt if not careful enough. This place is like from a 4-5 hrs ride from San Jose, so it is good to go for more than just a weekend, if you really want to take advantage of your stay.
