There's a lot of news time being devoted to the pedestrian fatality involving a driverless #Uber car in Arizona, but there are quite a few big stories the company is involved with. Reporter Jonathan Anderson returned to the podcast to talk about some of them, and what direction they might all ultimately head: https://beststory.podbean.com/e/the-best-story-ive-heard-today-with-usa-today-wisconsin-reporter-jonathan-anderson/

This is a little hard to swallow. +Justin Thurman and I skipped the appetizers and went right to the main course, discussing what may be a future cuisine option for today's episode of the podcast.

No bones about it, this one is going to stick with you for a while.

Shop local! Buy local! Eat local!

It's local enough. But local means a lot of things and Spencer Elliott of the USA Today Network tells us there are no real rules about what it means. We do know one thing it means, though, and that's money.

We're still better than the robots ... at least in some categories. My office neighbor, journalism professor Joe Coleman came to tell us about a story that touches on the modern day John Henry, what's next, and a bit about the future of work in general:

There's a prickly problem with the person next door. And if you have pansies or parsley or parsnip, this problem is one you'll want to pay attention to. There's a person pinching and plundering plants in the Palmetto State. +Justin Thurman returns to the program to share the story:

Today +Lauren Reichart Smith and I talked about the new record holder for oldest message in a bottle. She's got a mischievous idea for a message of her own. What note would you send in a bottle?

Bicycles hold a lot of nostalgia inside their frames. This is what I know: First, I put my knee into the turn. Second, my bike is going to go wherever I'm looking. Most importantly, the sense of freedom a bike gives us is hard to reproduce.

But bikes hold a lot of mystery, too, mathematically speaking. The design values behind it all, industrial design professor +Christopher Arnold says, go beyond simply building or riding a bike. Great conversation here:

It could be the kids, it could be the technology, or it could just be a changing of the time, but +Justin Thurman brings us a Guardian story that says children are having a hard time with the physical part of learning how to write. Fun show on the podcast:

After the #Parkland shooting, Delta took a policy stand. Now, #Georgia lawmakers are getting involved. And THAT has other cities trying to court the airline.

There are a lot of moving parts here, but +André Natta brings it all into perspective: https://beststory.podbean.com/e/the-best-story-ive-heard-today-with-john-s-knight-journalism-fellow-andre-natta/

The Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors is a new advisory group that reports to Pope Francis. They have a big goal: “creating a culture of safeguarding.”

Indiana Daily Student news editor Dominick Jean talked about what that might practicably mean.
