The first yogasutra focuses on "Atha yoganusasanam". In Sanskrit, any auspicious undertaking is first started with the word "atha", which can be translated to mean "now begins". By using this term Patanjali focuses on the NOW, not later, not tomorrow, not next week, but the importance of taking hold of being present. Atha is a Sanskrit word that means “now begins”. It teaches us the importance of not dwelling on the past and not worrying about the future.

The Yoga Sutras by Patanjali are texts to live by. In his sutras, he mentions that the vrittis (mind's restless thoughts) are restrained (quietened) by dedicated practice and nonattachment.

Though they sound contradictory, dedication and dispassion (abhyasa and vairagya), yoga is meant to reconcile seeming contradictions—to create wholeness or balance.

An effort is needed to bring the mind to the present moment and this is called abhyasa.

The word Vairagya has been defined as the attraction which arises due to pleasure derived from any object. Vairagya means the absence of any attraction towards objects which give pleasure. It is important for the yogi to understand the significance of non-attachment as it is almost impossible to achieve chitta-vritti-nirodha unless one can eliminate raga and dvesha. Even to acheive a state of vairagya, constant practice (abhyasa) is needed.

Ask yourself: Do trivial things easily throw you off balance? Are you confused? Is your mind in conflict? The mind often oscillates between the past and future, causing worry and anticipation. Desires, fear, cravings, aversions grip the mind. To drop the conflicts in the mind, it is essential to bring the mind to the present moment.

Yoga cleanses the body and mind of accumulated stress and negative impressions. Pranayamas calm down the agitated mind.

It implies that now the student is ready to hear and now the teacher is available and willing to teach. It implies additionally that the student has learned a great deal on his/her own before this point and is now willing to undertake the difficult and sometimes very demanding teaching of classical yoga. The understanding of now is the most important thing that can be learned from the study of yoga. In its most simple and pure form, yoga brings one deeply into the present, into the now. This is at the heart of the teachings of yoga and its profound significance can be found in the very first word of the Yoga Sutras.

The word "anusasanam" is an interesting one. It is variously translated as "exposition" of "discipline". It concludes the verse as "now yoga is explained" or "now the discipline of yoga is presented". The important point here is to remember that yoga is considered a coherent discipline which requires focus and determination. Therefore Patanjali states clearly in verse one that progress in yoga does not come by accident.
