Great review article in the journal Molecular Psychiatry on how the gut bacteria/microbiome affect the development of mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. It is a bit long but for those who have an interest is very informative. An important point from the entire article is the vast influence that gut bacteria have on mental health. Exciting news for those of us working in the field of digestive health. Improving the make-up of your gut bacteria helps far beyond digestion. Exciting arena as a target for future therapies.

Whether or not you are pregnant, this is important information to anyone with who follows a gluten-free diet, especially people with celiac disease.
The FDA has now approved corn tortillas in the USA to be fortified with folic acid. Gluten-free products are not typically fortified with folic acid so deficiency is common on the gluten-free diet.Fortification of tortillas is not mandatory, so read labels if you are trying to assure adequate intake of this vitamin.
While this is especially important to anyone who is pregnant or planning to get pregnant it is also important news for the entire gluten-free community who often rely on corn as a dietary staple.

Take a quick listen to this short audio segment on new research findings re: full fat dairy products. Consuming full fat dairy products resulted in a lower risk of type2 diabetes. Prior studies have shown full fat products also decrease weight gain compared to low fat
products.
Is it because fat is satiating and less calories are consumed overall or since weight gain may be increased with spikes in blood sugar (which are decreased by fat intake) could full fat products may be beneficial for this reason? I am sure future research will be done to help shed light!

A fact you may not know about melatonin from one of the country's leading experts on herbal medications and supplements. Important if you suffer from IBS or digestive problems.
From Tieraona Low Dog, MD:
Melatonin has gotten plenty of press as a natural way to re-establish your circadian rhythm but it also has some surprising secondary uses such as preventing heartburn and easing symptoms of IBS. Why would that be? Because the pineal gland gets most of the credit for melatonin production, many people are unaware that cells in the GI tract produce large quantities as well. As melatonin levels rise, two things happen. The production of stomach acid is dialed back and the sphincter between your stomach and esophagus is tightened, preventing upward flow of acid. A well-done study in 2010 showed that 3 mg of melatonin before bedtime improved reflux symptoms in patients with GERD and at the 8-week mark, the effects of melatonin rivaled that of Prilosec! Melatonin also helps protect the lining of the stomach and small intestine and is found in high concentrations in the large intestine where it regulates motility and prevents cramping, which is why it can help IBS. As far as safety: studies suggest that in otherwise healthy people, doses of 3 mg of melatonin taken daily for up to one year are not associated with adverse effects or rebound reflux or insomnia upon discontinuation. You should check with your physician or midwife before using during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

It is always such a blessing when a teacher understands childrens' food allergies. May this story be helpful in guiding other teachers with regards to the importance of inclusion. This simple show of understanding makes an immeasureable difference to a child and is easy to do. We have been lucky recipients of actions such as this, from teachers, and are forever grateful.

New research on how sugar fuels cancer growth. Higher sugar consumption may increase cancer risk, particularly that of breast cancer. Life is about moderation and balance but the average American consumes too much sugar and decreasing sugar consumption is simple. This one change clearly can have significant health benefits and the start of the new year is the perfect time to make it.
