Why Keywords Are Still So Very Important for SEO by Tyler Hermanson

Great article on how keywords are not dead in SEO. We've all heard the hype many times. However - even with the "topics not terms" approach it still very much comes down to keywords.

We speak with them, write with them and describe using them... even in search. It is self-contradicting to think that actual keyword optimization would be replaced by something which itself is based upon the thing it is replacing. Optimizing for topics, semantics, etc, is based on keywords. Google still ranks based on keywords.

Many have received emails from Google to setup their new "" website. It even pops up a wizard which states that the keywords you use on the page help it to get ranked.

I will, however, disagree with the author's comment on the Meta Description tag. I'd agree it doesn't affect rankings (if we take Google at their word) however if you have a Meta-Desc tag then it can help increase click-throughs to the site.
That is the true power of that tag. It's better than Google building out the snippet description from page content. You control the message.

Linking to a redirect in your Nav Menu can cause bad things to happen if...

Check out this interesting case we were presented with and how a simple Spring Cleaning effort to remove low-quality content, mixed with a 3xx redirect and some lack of tracking changes caused a site to drop 4 pages overnight.

Great insight into how Google deals with low-quality content.

Hi folks! I've been tracking what might be an update. Although, I believe that I've seen a Penguin penalty be reversed but it took a long time. WIth Penguin being built into the core algo now, we should be seeing this kind of dramatic change.

I also see where different keywords are rising at different times. The main rise was on Sept. 5th.

Could Google be doing slower updates so that it appears on a per-keyword (relevance) basis and not page or site-wide? It would be a sneaky way to stay under the radar on algo-update tracking.

Your thoughts, experiences?

In psychology, cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time, performs an action that is contradictory to one or more beliefs, ideas or values, or is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing beliefs, ideas, or values

Google WMT or GWT?

Hello all!

Just wanted to clarify something.  More and more people recently have been referring to Webmaster Tools as GWT and it can sometimes be confusing, so since there are nearly 200k people in this community (kudos +SEO ) I thought it might be time to try to get folks to refer to it as WMT (which it was for so many years) or, of course, the new Search Console.

Normally it wouldn't be an issue but because GWT actually refers to Google Web Toolkit, which has been around for quite a while, it can cause you to ask that question "are you referring to... or...?

Anyhoo, thanks and Happy Holidays!

Hi Community!
