Coming out of hibernation today to fly to Northfield, Minnesota for this cool-looking conference on visual communication:

https://apps.carleton.edu/vizconference

...in a cool town, apparently:

...then back to drawing, drawing, drawing 'til the book is done!

Dispatch from Hibernation

This was a really nice surprise on the night before my birthday; Tom Spurgeon offering some thoughts on my '80s series Zot!.

Putting together the Zot! collection helped me come to grips with the limitations of my early work. For years, I couldn't look at those issues; all I saw were the mistakes. Nowadays, positive words like Tom's just make me feel good in a relaxing, uncomplicated way.

I'm going to be pretty quiet this year while I work on the graphic novel. It's a very big book that I'm trying hard to get right, and just drawing, drawing, drawing seems like the best path to accomplishing that now.

Eventually, I'll start sharing some of it, but right now I'm just getting up every day and working; including tomorrow. As my loving-but-frustrated family can tell you, simply drawing comics every day is the best present anyone could get me.
Comics I Read In Series Form In The 1980s: Zot! image. I sometimes wonder after the demands I hear from younger consumers of popular art that they must start at the beginning with new-to-them works or...

I've been reading comics for over three decades and Zot! is by far my favourite title. The other year my wife obtained - I don't know from where - a collected edition that you had autographed and it is a most treasured possession (along with all my original issues). Thank you for such a powerful and engaging story.

I've always wanted to go to Montreal, but alas, now is not the time. I bet the workshop was amazing though!

This is the first I've seen of these. Maybe they've been circulating for years, but OMG, Lookit this guy.

Did Martin Van Buren ever do a photo shoot like this? I'm thinking no.

I do remember seeing these sometime around the conclusion of the '08 election season. The photographer said she'd had them for years and was waiting until after the election to publicize them.

Here are some odd, intriguing comics by Neil Dvorak.

Pick one. then go full screen/full width for best results. The words are kinda small.

This is the second comic that I've seen in as many weeks that doesn't really look much like anything else out there*. More please, The Universe.

[*No, can't remember the name of the other just now...]

Hi All. Coming out of hibernation for a minute to let you know about the return of my Los Angeles 2-Day Workshop this February. Details at the link.

Might be a pretty awesome (or supremely weird) Xmas gift, depending on the recipient.

Still in hibernation while I work on the graphic novel (about 300 pages so far but I've got a ways to go). Will stumble out, blinking in the sunlight later next year, but in the meantime, expect only sporadic appearances here (and on Twitter).

Might show off a bit more of the GN soon, though. Mark Siegel offered a couple of panels at TCJ a few months back ( http://www.tcj.com/mark-siegel-part-three ) but I've really loved working on this book, so I wouldn't mind sharing a bit more.

Have a great holiday season!

I love the way Daniel managed to achieve immersion in webcomics. The 'gag-a-day surrounded by ads' doesn't work very well with graphic novels. By the way has anyone seen this: http://xkcd.com/1110/

+Scott McCloud, tempting, but I don't think that would work. It's a Karate class and I'm testing a guy for yellow belt that night. My own fault for not keeping up on cool things happening in the area, otherwise I wouldn't have scheduled the test for that night. Hopefully, some of my cartooning buddies can make it over and take notes for me.

Attention: Idaho!
(and Eastern Washington State)

Join me this Wednesday, March 28, for a public lecture at The University of Idaho in Moscow. I’ll be speaking in the Ag Science Auditorium (Room 106) at 6:30 pm. More details here:

http://uicaaexperience.wordpress.com/2012/03/21/award-winning-comic-book-theorist-and-artist-scott-mccloud-lecture-next-wednesday

(And if you’re coming in from out of town, be sure to swing by the legendary Safari Pearl, our Moscow hosts during our 50 State Tour in 2007. I don’t have a formal signing this trip, but I plan to swing by and say hi while in town.)

+Scott McCloud meep! Or the stalwart students who have to stick their arms up past the elbow into the cow's rear-end. Agriculture school tours do have a tendency to be memorable :-)
