Destroying artillery with hyperbolas

During WW I, a British mathematician thought of a way to determine the location of enemy artillery, which was miles away, by using only the sound of the gun being fired.

The method worked like this: the time that the sound from X reached microphones at locations A and B differed by some amount, and the difference was measured precisely. From that, and the speed of sound, the difference in the distance AX and BX was then known. Mathematically, this condition determines a hyperbola (blue) – X was somewhere along that line.

The same analysis was done for microphones B and C (or A and C), which determines a second hyperbola (red). The two intersect at X.

They would then begin firing their own artillery at location X, in an attempt to destroy the gun there.

The system worked very well.
