This re-share is late, because applications are closed. So the reason for the share is to say that if you saw this and are scheduled to attend the Cape Town day (Aug 25), do chat to the organizers on the day and let us know that you're a GDG Cape Town follower/regular :-)

"Applications are now open for the 1st Google Developer Summit series in Sub Saharan Africa.
This is a premier technical event focused on Google technologies .
Join Googlers and experts from around the world in talks and hands-on codelabs on Material Design, Push Notifications for Chrome, Offline Page Caching and much more.

Thanks so much for all of those who attended our meetup last night. We had a great time sharing our experiences and learning about how other developers are using Go. We're excited to grow the Cape Town Go developer community, so let us know what you'd like to see more of!

As promised, the slides for both talks are available.

"A slight intro to Go" - Keegan

"Connection balancing with Go channels" - Timothy

There's a new Go meetup in town, and the first event is going to be in association with the GDG. Look out for the event invite soon, and be sure to come talk to the Go devs if you are into (or looking into, or curious about) Go. :-)

============

This meetup is aimed at beginners, it will cover some of the basics of building an android app.

We are going to touch on the basics of Android, from idea to conception.

Things we will cover :

1. Prototyping your idea before coding
2. Using prototyping tools
3. Activities
4. Fragments
5. Integrating libraries
6. Asynchronous networking in Android

By the end of the meetup you should feel confident to tackle new Android projects. We will post links of the slides and code used to work on after the event if you could not complete everything in the short time we have.

Absolutely fantastic, to be able to build a fully functional app, from memory, shows the power that total familiarity with the platform, can give to the creator. Thank you.

Yesterday we ran an Android for beginners workshop at the University of Western Cape. The Android strongholds of GDG Cape Town did an excellent job, it felt a lot like the way Google mentored their own code lab session at I/O this year! (so thank you +Joseph Kandi +maia grotepass +Alex Koller
I/O has given us a huge boost of inspiration, so look out for more of these workshops, we want to build the Android community in Cape Town further. We had 30 participants and 5 staff. We also had 5 with a working version of the app we built together.
