This penny is the beginning of a legend.
Er, well, the middle of the end of the beginning, at least. It is a story that will be told for weeks to come! It has immortalized a Mexican magazine, and a very ambitious piece of graffiti, as well as four of the new generation of heroes.
This is the story of the really friggin' heavy bookshelf.
The denizens of the after-school tech theatre (circa 2013 a.d.) were furthering the known boundaries of architecture and physics in their construction, as an attempt to please their ruler, whose name is lost to history, and shall only be remembered as "the director."
Our four heroines were hard at work, when the main advisor of the director took them aside. "I have a mission for you." He said, and pointed to an ancient and rickety construction, a relic from ages past.
"That bookshelf is crap. I need you guys to grab another one. There should be one in the Mechanical room."
He directed them toward the staircase, pressing a golden key into the hand of the nearest. "It shouldn't be too hard."
Little did he know.
Our four heroines, one wearing black, one garbed in red, one clothed with gray, and one dressed in a purple shirt she wanted an excuse to ruin and not wear again, looked at each other.
"Aw, come on." Said one.
"Let's go." Said another.
They ascended the staircase, footsteps echoing in an empty hall. The journey had begun. The advisors words echoed in their minds.
"Wait, did he say 2063, or 64?"
"I wonder what would happen if we snapped a water pipe in the room."
"The school would flood."
"We'd get a day off!"
"Mrs.Harris would make us work anyway. Why do we need a new bookshelf?"
"The one on the stage doesn't have a back."
They stopped in front of the door. The one wearing gray turned the golden key in the lock.
The door swung open to reveal a labyrinth of concrete and paint, of desks long forgotten and pipes that gathered dust no matter how hard and fast they worked. It was the dirty underbelly of schooling, the secret works
There was a bump of concrete protruding half a foot from the ground that was almost certainly only there to trip people.
"Watch your step." She said, and they entered the maze.
