If you're an artist, you know the lure of good art supplies. I stalk sales and coupons so I can get them, and watch other people's feeds for tips on what they're using. I always check picture book copyright pages to find out what the illustrators used. When you find a good product, it makes all the difference.

I'm about halfway through this year's Newbery award winner and am loving the fresh voices of the unique characters (an ultra-shy boy from a family of extroverts, a wanna-be psychic, a fearless deaf girl, and an insecure bully) and how they see the world. Erin Entrada Kelly writes with sympathy and tenderness toward her characters, even the antagonist.

Sharing a little peek of a work in progress this morning. For so long I've dreamed of getting a picture book published, and one big step toward that goal is creating a book dummy--the words of my book laid out page by page with art sketches and a few pieces of finished art. This month I'm focusing on thumbnails and cover art. Hope to share the finished piece with you soon!

I was digging through some old stuff and found this watercolor piece from way back in art school. I think it looks nice with my art room walls, don't you?

I loved reading this beautiful little gem this weekend. It's about a plucky little girl who sees a problem and extends a helping hand--what a great reminder to reach out and forge connection wherever we can. Thanks, Liz Garton Scanlon, for sharing this gift with the world!

I kind of adore my new pencil box from Danica Studio. It's my favorite minty aqua color, plus it has merpeople on it. And I can put my pencils in it and carry it around for on-the-go sketching. What could be better?

My friend Sarah Parker Rubio has good words for those of us who aspire to be published. Don't send it out until it's ready!

Wishing you a wonderful Valentines Day with your most-loved people! It's also a good time to dig down and press in to the love of the one who knows our souls more intimately and deeply than any other.

Human love is wonderful because it feeds our deepest need for connection, belonging, intimacy. We long to be known, every little part of us, and still be loved in spite of the ugly bits.

I'm still discovering what that looks like, to know the Father's love for me. It's a truth to be savored and returned to, to set our minds on until our hearts believe it.

One thing I'm sure of--He is delighted with me--and with you. He made me, and He said, "She is good!" We're quick to see the differences between ourselves as reasons not to like each other ... but God was delighted to fashion each of us as unique expressions of His love and of His nature. I'm taking a page from His playbook and delighting in the unique and beautiful that is you, today.

"And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love." Ephesians 3:18, The Message

Here's a throwback to a piece I drew several years ago: two children engrossed in writing, building worlds and adventures. Trying to capture how amazing it feels to bring people and places to life. Graphite on paper.

If you buy a house in Illinois, be prepared to shovel snow until it's almost as tall as you are.
