How to Set Goals You’ll Actually Achieve

Knowing how to set and reach your goals increases your chances of achieving them. Figure out what you want to do and how to get there using “implementation intentions.”

Implementation intentions help with all sorts of goals—from losing weight to being more open with loved ones—by anticipating opportunities to move toward them. This strategy also recognizes obstacles and distractions and finds effective ways of avoiding them.

Here’s how to work out your own implementation intentions:

1) Accentuate the positive—focus on what you want to do instead of what you don’t. Instead of telling yourself, “I want to stop eating junk food,” try making an effort to eat more fruits and vegetables.

2) Be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-Based). SMART goals are broken into smaller pieces, or targets. A SMART weight loss goal would be, “I want to lose one pound per week this month” while a non-SMART goal might aim to “be as thin as I was in high school.” The first SMART goal provides better motivation by helping you set small goals you can actually achieve.

3) Align your goals with your values—this makes it much easier to stay committed to them. Goal-setting should be personal and based on what you want out of life.

4) Be kind to yourself—it’s normal to slip up from time to time. View obstacles as a chance to reassess your plans instead. See failure as a learning opportunity—maybe your goals need to be tweaked, or maybe your methods do.

5) Just do it—don’t wait for inspiration to strike to hold back until the “right time.”

6) Don’t show off identity-related goals by announcing them to your friends (like saying you’re going to work out every day). This can make you feel like you’ve already achieved part of your goal before you even get started. However, telling others about your goals can benefit you when you tell the right people who will provide the right support.
