The last few weeks have been tough times at The Sacramento Press, but it's time we dusted ourselves off and got back on our feet. For that, I'm going to need your help.

I'm going back to doing what I love most - writing, reporting and editing. The chef has been sent back to the kitchen, and has no intention of leaving again. I'd like to know what food you'd like prepared, or what exactly you'd like me to write about.

We won't be able to run the same type of operation that we have in times past. The saying "do more with less" was popular for a time in journalism circles, but there are limits to that tripe. Sometimes you do less with less. Losing two reporters over the course of the year was hard. Losing our associate editor and community manager will be harder. Allison Joy was at the heart of everything we did at Sac Press over the last year. I’ll have more to say about her in an upcoming post.

Some things will stay the same. Amber Stott, our farm-to-fork writer, and our soccer writer, R.J. Cooper, will be sticking around. R.V. Scheide will continue his occasional column, and help out with editing when I write longer features. Community contributors will still be able to post, and we’ll maintain our free copyediting service. I’ll post on the site everyday. My general intention is to go at a slower pace, and try to do work that is thoughtful and analytical.

As our owner Ben Ilfeld explained in his recent article, the future of Sac Press is uncertain, and he's considering different approaches, including selling the publication, or converting to a nonprofit or a co-op. I lean toward the nonprofit and co-op approach, and hope the right people come forward to help make something like that happen (if that's you, and you're sitting on your hands, get moving, because this will not happen by itself.) My focus though, will be directly on the content. I can’t say for sure how much longer I’ll be here, but I plan to use whatever time I have to do as much meaningful work and real journalism as I can. To put it bluntly: I will not chase pageviews, but quality, and hope audience can come as a result.

I'd like Sac Press to be a place where people go for the discussion and to find alternative perspectives. I don't want to fall into the trap of doing what's been done before because that's what comes naturally, so please, if you have ideas, now would be a good time to share them.

Are you saying that the Walmartiztion of journalism is a failure and producing inferior reporting?

I'm wring my first column. Now that I'm not reporting so much I feel more free to do it, and it will add something new to the site. As I write, it seems like I'm going more toward a dispatch style than an actual opinion piece, but more opinion and personal perspective may start to come out as I get used to it and start to shake off the dust.
