On February 1, the first of four sessions in the framework of the Online Seminar "Teaching Hebrew as an Additional Language" (bit.ly/1SFeD7u), was held.
Over 20 participants from various countries, including Tunisia, Italy, Germany, the USA, Thailand, and Israel, participated in the session, listened to a fascinating lecture titled "The Teacher as Creator: Principles of Planning Studies in Hebrew as an Additional Language in the Diaspora", led by Prof. Luba Charlap (bit.ly/1SXtX0N), and held a lively discussion via both vocal means and written chat.
Following are some of the things Prof. Charlap said about the background to the topic and about the need to deal with it:
"As opposed to teachers of Hebrew as a first language and as an additional language in Israel who are fortunate to have curricula provided by the Israeli Ministry of Education, the Hebrew teacher in the Diaspora has practically nothing to lean on. While there are various bodies that offer a range of programs, textbooks, and supplementary materials, the teacher has to cope single-handedly with the random selection on the one hand, and with a lack of direction and an absence of guidance on the other. This means that in addition to teaching, he is grappling with tasks that are normally the purview of research and development organizations. It is he who is supposed to decide on the teaching method, on the choice of textbooks, on the quest for complementary teaching materials, and even on writing booklets, devising language games, and so on, in order to diversify his teaching. In fact, the Hebrew teacher is not only a teacher – he is also an entrepreneur, creator, and editor… In the face of this reality, the session was dedicated to elucidating several fundamental principles as regards planning studies and tailoring them to Hebrew as an additional language and to the question of how it is possible to implement them in various settings in the Diaspora. We proposed several ideas that may well be of assistance to the teacher and the school team in the process of planning and implementing studies that suit the nature of the community and the needs of the learners.".
