Why are some people of my country (India) stupid?Disclaimer: Before you call me racist, let me tell you that I'm Indian too. Does that mean I'm calling myself stupid? Yes. I'm criticizing my own people just so we can improve. It's better to call yourself and the people of your country stupid rather than watch it all happen and do nothing about it. Read on for why.
Every day, I happen to come across forum posts about genuine topics like software development, tech support, hardware questions, etc until someone comes around and starts an off-topic conversation along the lines of "Hi, my hello world code isn't compiling, can you help?!?!?!?!?!?!1111" or "Hi frndz, how r u?". By reading their screen name, I can tell most of them are Indian.
Consider the screenshot attached to this post. It is this comment thread on Google+ about Oracle's website showing up as just a Hello World page: https://plus.google.com/u/0/106413090159067280619/posts/ZFTKZQfjUDH
It's very important to say that while many Indians are smart, there are inherent flaws in our country that is screwing up with the rest of the country. Which is very sad; just think about the potential of a well-versed and well-educated India. Sadly, that won't happen any time soon.
There's no single reason behind this phenomenon. There are multiple ones, and we as a country should have fixed that early on in the game:
1) Crappy educational system
: Our educational system is both great and crappy. Great because they teach you a lot of stuff and, if you can follow along, make you well-versed about everything. But the system was NOT designed to make people smart. It spoon-feeds you every answer, and takes the thinking part out of learning.
And, when you spoon-feed answers to 1.2 billion people, guess what, the majority of them stop thinking about things and find the short-cut to finding the answer: asking for help from others.
2) Low value of life
: It happens only in India. Everyone seeks for fame. Everyone tries to "know" as many strangers as possible just to stand above the huge masses.
This is the reason there are "how r u" posts in the attached screenshots. How do we fix that? Tell everyone they're special, and ask them to set personal goals rather than follow the herd.
3) The "superiority" of speaking English
: Just because one can speak English doesn't make one better than those who can't. You just learnt English as your second language? Great! Just don't say something in English which you won't be saying in Hindi, Tamil, etc. Think about what your words make you look like.
4) Misunderstanding about the Internet
: The Internet isn't a box of crap where you can do whatever you want and get away with it. It's a second world, and treat it like one. It's a society in itself.
5) No one has done anything about it
: Have I done anything either? No.
