Local SEO 101
Business owners know by now that search engine optimization matters. According to industry research, search and email are the top web-based activities worldwide, and about 70% of the links users actually click from search results are organic, not paid (though PPC campaign management services may still be well worth it—about 72% of PPC marketers plan to increase PPC spending next year). But if you’re a brick-and-mortar business or serve a clientele in only a specific area, there’s an additional concern: local SEO.

What Is Local SEO?
Local SEO is the process of trying to make your company’s website rank higher in local search results. This might be important when users specifically search for an area, as with a term like “SEO company Phoenix AZ.” But search engines are still developing how they handle local searches, so searching only “SEO company” might give mixed local and general results. However, it’s likely that local searches will become more prevalent, as search engines recognize that a user typing in “top SEO company” is probably trying to find a company in the area to work with, and not just the top SEO company in general.

How Do I Optimize My Website for Local Searches?
Local Internet marketing varies from general Internet marketing in a few important ways. Here are a few general tips:
• Create place pages. Google, Bing and Yahoo all allow you to submit your information directly.
• Make sure you have your NAP (name, address, phone) information listed on every page of your website.
• Use location-specific keywords. Don’t, however, use them so often that it makes your copy unwieldy and unpleasant to actually read.
• Upload attractive photos to your Google+ page. This matters for the photo-focused “carousel” of results that appears in Google’s local search results.
Working with a good SEO company can help you develop more specific strategies based on the type of business you run and where you’re located.

What Other Sites Matter?
Ranking higher in search results isn’t just about your website, it’s about something called authority. This is determined by how many inbound links you have—that is, how many links on other websites lead to your website. This is one reason that it’s good to guest post on other sites. Also encourage your customers to leave reviews for you on Yelp or Google.

SEO Resuscitation

Anyone can have SEO, the question is do you have SEO that is living, breathing and healthy?  The almighty Google, and other search engines as well, all have one thing in common; they require you be active on the internet in more ways than one.  Everyday quick actions can immediately help rescue your website, bringing it back to life without calling 911.
5 quickest ways to avoid digital death today are:
1. Content & Frequency – Like a good exercise program, ‘How often’ matters.  SEO is about content and updating it frequently to gain search engine traction. This is exercised in blogging, posting articles, videos and creating movement on your social media pages. No matter how big or small a business, this rule is consistent across the board to all.

2. Blog – What, you don’t have a blog? Time and time again people don’t know how powerful a blog is in the quality of like of your SEO. The blog is such a powerful resource right at your fingertips; a consistent conduit of organic SEO for you. Blogging does not have to be difficult either. Break it down to these easy subjects of latest news, your industry topics, your professional tips and your company’s events. It’s all just news and articles that is relevant to your company and industry overall.

3. Website Updating – You haven’t touched your blog since New Years 2013, and your ‘About’ page is peppered with employees who have left the company so long ago, you’ve  forgotten about them. This is SEO suicide at its best my friend. This blatant act of inactivity makes search engines turn their nose up and overlook your relatively now dead URL. Pump up the volume by updating this data and it will be cooing like a brand new baby soon enough.

4. Sharing is Caring – You have a blog but you don’t have any ‘Share’ buttons.  Why should you care about sharing? These buttons allow people to share the information straight from the source, therefore leading people directly to you.  This is a backlink strategy that would makes a search engine sing and boosts your presence tremendously.

5. Mobile Responsiveness – People are on the go and need information now! However, no matter how loyal they may be to your site, if it isn’t mobile responsive than they will move on quicker than the common cold. Everyone’s website needs to have the ability to downsize to fit the screen of their personal mobile device. I.E…the site needs to fit your cell phone so that it is easier for the user to navigate it, therefore keeping them on your site longer while on the go.

6 Reasons with People don’t do SEO (even though they know they should)

Organic search engine traffic is the most valuable asset for your website.   Often people are in denial of this – but this is a FACT.  So why do some many businesses refrain from actively pursuing in organic SEO activities?

Whether you are a real estate agent, entrepreneur, or run a small business it is crucial that you focus on increasing organic presence and traffic.

Here are the top reasons we see people object to doing it.

Objection 1: SEO produce results?
Many people believe that because of continuous changes to search engines algorithms and various new developments in the SEO industry, SEO techniques no longer work.   Nothing is further from the truth though. Many SEO techniques can still help a website to achieve higher rankings and increase its traffic.

Objection 2: SEO is erratic?
SEO has an opinion of being a very unpredictable and unreliable traffic source.  Once you optimize your site to its maximum SEO potential, there is very little chance that you will experience any problems with it.  SEO seems unpredictable only if you know very little of it. Once you educate yourself in the basics of search engine optimization, you will begin to understand how to use it to bring results and when that’s going to happen.

Objection 3: SEO changes too quickly?
SEO is a fast developing industry. This is partially due to search engines constantly updating their algorithms, with many of those updates happening daily. Not all of those changes affect the website’s performance directly though, some are only minor tweaks that won’t affect your rankings in any noticeable way.

Objection 4: SEO is too expensive?
SEO is not free. In order to achieve results, you need to invest money, time and other resources in it. The cost of SEO however is incomparably lower to what it costs to promote a website through paid advertising channels like PPC for instance or purchasing traffic in any other way.
Moreover, compared to the total spend for the paid traffic options, SEO offers a fairly good ROI.

Objection 5: SEO takes too long to bring results?
It takes time to build rankings and establish an online presence, that’s true. At the same time, SEO is one of the steadiest marketing activities and once your website is optimized, it can keep on continuously bringing results for your business.

Objection 6: SEO is too technical?
Some aspects of SEO are certainly technical, affecting how a website is built and optimized. The majority of SEO work however focuses on stringent marketing activities including:  finding keywords to target, creating content that attracts visitors from Google searches, having a local citation strategy are all key parts of success.

Conclusion
Given its many benefits, investing in organic search engine optimization is more important than ever before.   Google, who has over an 81% market share of search engine traffic, has made it clear that this is not going away anytime soon, if ever.  If you are not doing this, your competitors probably are which can be detrimental to your business!

Local Listings done incorrectly may have BIG Consequences

Research shows that the internet is now the primary way that most US consumers find local business information and search engines were identified as the primary tool used by consumers to find local information.

Furthermore, “While the internet has emerged as the go-to source for finding location information and details about businesses ranging from hair salons and veterinary clinics to gyms and restaurants, it is rife with errors. As a result, companies are missing out on customers at their bricks-and-mortar stores, and driving them to competitors, say analysts.” (Financial Times 3/4/13)

Your business address, phone number, email address, hours, policies, specials and other details—they’re all subject to change. Make sure your local listings are up-to-date
